My Thoughts on Stray
"Stray" is a novel that truly surprised me. Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I quickly found myself completely absorbed in its unique world and the journey of its characters. It's a blend of western fantasy with a distinctly original flavor, and I found myself drawn in by the well-developed world and the complex relationships between the characters.
First Impressions
Initially, the sheer length of the novel was daunting, but I soon realized that every chapter contributed to the rich tapestry of the story. The initial translation quality had some minor errors, but the care and effort put into cleaning it up quickly became apparent. It's a testament to how a dedicated translator can elevate even MTL material.
What Works Well
The world-building is undoubtedly one of the strongest aspects of "Stray." It avoids common fantasy tropes, creating a fresh and engaging setting with its own unique politics and magic system. The characters are another highlight. They are flawed, realistic, and experience genuine growth throughout the story. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters, Nemo and Oliver, and their unwavering support for each other. Their journey, filled with both joy and heartache, is genuinely heartwarming. The side characters are also well-developed, each with their own compelling stories and motivations. The plot is intricate and well-connected, with seemingly insignificant details from earlier chapters becoming crucial later on. The author masterfully weaves together mystery, comedy, and moments of intense emotion, creating a truly unforgettable reading experience.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed "Stray," I did notice some pacing issues. At times, the side plots and side characters felt a bit too extensive, slowing down the development of the main storyline. Some readers may find that the ending feels a little abrupt.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned specific plot points, including character identities and the fates of certain characters. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
Final Verdict
Despite its minor flaws, "Stray" is a captivating and well-crafted novel that I highly recommend. Its unique world-building, compelling characters, and intricate plot make for a truly memorable reading experience. If you're looking for a western fantasy BL with depth, heart, and a touch of humor, then "Stray" is definitely worth your time. I'm giving it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
