My Thoughts on Strange World Little Cooking Saint
"Strange World Little Cooking Saint" promised a delightful blend of cooking, cultivation, and adventure, and for the most part, it delivered. While it has its quirks, I found myself genuinely enjoying the journey of Shiyu, our transmigrated protagonist, as she navigates a strange new world with her culinary skills and a surprising amount of grit.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a modern-day chef waking up in a xianxia world. The early chapters set a good pace, introducing Shiyu's resourcefulness as she makes the best of her beggar-like circumstances. The cooking aspect was intriguing, even if a bit rough around the edges. I was curious to see how her skills would evolve and how she'd carve a place for herself.
What Works Well
Shiyu herself is a major draw. She's not a Mary Sue; she makes mistakes, learns from them, and grows stronger both physically and emotionally. I appreciated that she viewed many of the young male characters with a mature, almost older-sisterly eye. The world-building, while sometimes inconsistent, is generally engaging, with unique spirit creatures and a sense of adventure that kept me hooked. I found the plot to be interesting, with plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. What surprised me most was the depth of the side characters. Each one has their own story, often bittersweet, which added layers to the overall narrative.
Areas of Concern
I do have to address the elephant in the room: the cooking. While the concept is fantastic, the execution can be a bit…questionable. There are moments where the food descriptions are simply inaccurate or illogical. Also, I can see how some readers might find Shiyu's actions in the later arcs frustrating. There are times when her impulsiveness and occasional lack of foresight can be a bit jarring, especially given her supposed awareness of the dangers around her.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about the romance. It's... complicated. I'm not going to spoil everything, but be prepared for some unexpected twists and turns. The author doesn't shy away from heartbreak and loss, and the romantic subplot is definitely not a straightforward, happily-ever-after affair. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, this might not be the novel for you.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I found "Strange World Little Cooking Saint" to be a worthwhile read. The engaging plot, well-developed characters, and unique blend of genres kept me entertained from beginning to end. If you're willing to overlook some inconsistencies and embrace the story's quirks, you might just find yourself falling in love with this strange and wonderful world.
