My Thoughts on Evening Snow
"Evening Snow" is a completed original xianxia novel with a lot to offer, but it might not be for everyone. With themes of reincarnation, betrayal, and possessiveness, it dives deep into the complexities of human (and immortal) relationships. I went in expecting a revenge-driven plot, but I found something much more nuanced, which was a pleasant surprise.
First Impressions
The initial hook is strong: a protagonist betrayed by those closest to him, given a second chance. I was immediately intrigued by the prospect of seeing how he would navigate his past relationships, especially with the added elements of possessive characters and hidden identities. It felt like a recipe for high drama, and in many ways, it delivered.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the exploration of the characters' motivations. While their actions were often reprehensible, the novel delves into the reasons behind their betrayals and obsessions. The shizun, for instance, is portrayed as a toxic but ultimately loving figure, whose controlling nature stems from a twisted sense of care. This added a layer of complexity that kept me engaged, even when I wanted to scream at the characters. The author does a solid job of building a world steeped in ancient Chinese culture, and the martial arts elements are well-integrated. The ending, while perhaps bittersweet, felt satisfying, with each character facing the consequences of their choices. The MC is also a refreshing change from the typical revenge-seeking protagonist. He doesn't wallow in hatred, but rather seeks to understand and ultimately move on from his past.
Areas of Concern
The romance, while present, felt a bit underdeveloped. The relationship between the MC and ML seemed to blossom a little too quickly, lacking the build-up and emotional depth I would have preferred. Some readers may also find the "regret kink" aspect of the plot repetitive or exhausting, as it heavily focuses on characters suffering for their past actions. The motivations of the ML seem a bit shallow, as his love is born out of guilt for his actions.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk spoilers for a sec. The fates of the shizun, shidi, and the fox demon are particularly noteworthy. The shizun's death in his own fantasy dream is a poignant end for a character haunted by his past. The shidi's choice to die with his brother, and the fox demon becoming a Buddhist, offer a sense of closure, albeit a tragic one.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Evening Snow" is a worthwhile read for those who enjoy xianxia novels with complex characters and morally gray themes. While the romance could be stronger, and the plot can feel repetitive at times, the exploration of betrayal, redemption, and the consequences of one's actions is compelling. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
