My Thoughts on Shh, There’s a Beast in the Imperial Palace
This novel promises a fluffy, sci-fi romance with a beastkin twist, and for the most part, it delivers. As a fan of lighthearted reads, I was drawn in by the premise of a hot-tempered lion and a cool ginkgo tree finding love across dimensions. While it has its charms, the overall experience left me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with their blend of action and adorable moments. The setup, involving a zombie apocalypse and interdimensional travel, was intriguing. I was excited to see how the relationship between the lion MC and the tree ML would blossom in this futuristic setting. Learning that this was from the same author as "Number One Lazy Merchant of the Beast World" gave me high hopes for a sweet and engaging story.
What Works Well
The undeniable strength of this novel lies in its fluff and sweetness. The dynamic between the MC and ML is undeniably cute, with the ML's doting nature being a major draw. Many readers, including myself, enjoyed the animalistic aspects of the MC, especially his lion cub form. The world-building, while not overly complex, is interesting enough to keep you invested, and the plot moves at a decent pace, making it a relatively quick and easy read.
Areas of Concern
Despite its strengths, the novel does have some shortcomings. The ending, in particular, seems to be a point of contention for many. I found it to be rather abrupt and lacking in closure, leaving several plot threads unresolved. Some readers also felt that the characters, especially the MC, could be impulsive and reckless, which detracted from their overall enjoyment. The author's handling of side characters, especially children, was also noted as a weak point.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews highlighted issues with the ending and character development, including the fate of the couple's adopted son. Some felt that the ML's actions sometimes bordered on enabling the MC's recklessness, and that certain plot points felt contrived or unnecessary.
Final Verdict
"Shh, There’s a Beast in the Imperial Palace" is a decent read if you're looking for a light, fluffy romance with a sci-fi twist. However, be prepared for a somewhat abrupt ending and some potential frustrations with character choices. While it shares a universe with "Number One Lazy Merchant of the Beast World," I wouldn't consider it essential to read that one first. Overall, it's an enjoyable, albeit flawed, novel that's best suited for readers who prioritize sweetness and fluff over intricate plot development.
