My Thoughts on She Professed Herself The Pupil Of The Wiseman (WN)
This web novel presents a unique twist on the isekai genre, and while it has its flaws, I found myself surprisingly invested in Mira's journey. The premise is certainly eye-catching: a player of a VRMMORPG gets transported into the game world, decades into the future, not as their Gandalf-esque avatar, but as the cute, silver-haired loli version they created using a vanity item.
First Impressions
Initially, the concept felt a bit outlandish, I'll admit. But the way the author gradually reveals the world and the circumstances surrounding the character transfer is quite well done. The initial confusion and gradual acceptance of the new reality were relatable, even amidst the fantastical setting. The protagonist's bewilderment at finding themselves in this new, yet familiar, world definitely hooked me in.
What Works Well
The world-building is a major strength. The author takes their time, meticulously detailing the environment and the nuances of this game-turned-reality. I appreciated the focus on Mira's analytical approach to her skills, experimenting and adapting them to her new circumstances. The fight scenes are also engaging, blending summoning with close-quarters combat in a unique style. It's also refreshing to see a story where the protagonist's power level is kept in check, and the plot unfolds at a more deliberate pace. The lack of "backstabbing" and "betrayal" also makes for a relaxing read, letting you immerse yourself in the story without constant anxiety.
Areas of Concern
The slow pace, while appreciated by some, can be a drawback for others. I can see how some readers might find the detailed descriptions excessive, leading to a feeling of stagnation. Some also might find the writing verbose, as if it's trying to say a lot, but lacking focus or a concrete goal. Some translations may be difficult to comprehend due to the literal nature of the translation, and some of the nuances of the original Japanese text are lost.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mention that as the story progresses, Mira spends a significant amount of time traveling, which might feel directionless to some readers. A specific arc involving thieves was also cited as being overly verbose and skippable without missing key plot points.
Final Verdict
Despite its potential shortcomings, "She Professed Herself The Pupil Of The Wiseman" offers a unique and engaging isekai experience. While it might not be for everyone, particularly those seeking fast-paced action, the detailed world-building, interesting magic system, and the protagonist's journey of self-discovery make it a worthwhile read. If you enjoy a slower, more immersive story with a gender-bending twist, this might just be your cup of tea. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
