My Thoughts on Secretly, But Unable to Hide It
This novel was such a heartwarming journey! I went in expecting a fluffy romance, and while it definitely delivered on that front, I was surprised by the depth and realism woven into the story. It's a charming slice-of-life that had me hooked from beginning to end.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was drawn in by the unique premise. Starting the story when the female lead, Sang Zhi, is just thirteen years old and developing a crush on her older brother's friend, Duan Jia Xu, is a bold move. I was a little apprehensive at first, but the author handled the age gap with such sensitivity and care that my concerns quickly faded. I found myself completely invested in Sang Zhi's journey of growth and her blossoming feelings.
What Works Well
The characters are the heart of this story. Sang Zhi is witty, brave, and refreshingly imperfect. She's not an overpowered Mary Sue, but a relatable young woman who matures beautifully throughout the novel. Duan Jia Xu is, quite simply, swoon-worthy. He's kind, gentle, and endlessly patient, but also possesses a playful, teasing side that I adored. Their interactions are filled with humor and genuine affection, making their relationship feel incredibly authentic.
I also really appreciated the portrayal of family dynamics, especially the sibling relationship between Sang Zhi and her brother, Sang Yan. Their bickering and teasing felt so realistic and added a layer of comedic relief to the story. The parents are also wonderfully supportive and understanding, creating a warm and loving family environment.
The plot itself is relatively simple, but it's executed with such skill that I never felt bored. The pacing is excellent, allowing the characters' feelings to develop naturally. I also loved that the story avoids unnecessary angst and drama, focusing instead on the characters' growth and their healthy relationship.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I can see how some readers might struggle with the translation. While the translator did a commendable job, there are definitely some areas where the grammar is a bit wonky and the sentences are difficult to understand. However, I found that I quickly got used to the writing style and it didn't detract too much from my overall enjoyment.
Final Verdict
Secretly, But Unable to Hide It is a delightful and heartwarming romance that I highly recommend. If you're looking for a sweet, fluffy story with well-developed characters and a realistic portrayal of family and relationships, this is the novel for you. Just be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride with the translation, but trust me, it's worth it!
