My Thoughts on Priest
"Priest" is a wild ride, to say the least. Diving into this novel, I knew I was signing up for something dark, and it definitely delivered. The tags alone – adult, fantasy, smut, tragedy, yaoi – paint a clear picture, but nothing truly prepares you for the emotional rollercoaster within.
First Impressions
Initially, I was captivated by the premise of a powerful, almost emotionless protagonist forced into a brutal relationship. The raw, untamed nature of the early chapters grabbed my attention, even if it made me uncomfortable at times. It's a story that throws you into the deep end, demanding you confront morally grey characters and disturbing situations.
What Works Well
The primary strength of "Priest" lies in its exploration of character growth, particularly the MC's slow journey toward understanding emotions and forming genuine connections. Witnessing the softening of his heart, the moments of humor amidst the darkness, and his eventual acceptance of the ML's flaws were surprisingly compelling. The writing, while not perfect, is effective in conveying the characters' inner turmoil and the intensity of their relationship. I found myself invested in their survival and, dare I say, their happiness.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The non-consensual elements, especially in the beginning, can be difficult to stomach and might be a deal-breaker for some readers. While the story eventually evolves beyond this, it's a significant aspect that needs to be acknowledged. I also felt that the ending, particularly the extras, could have been handled better. The rushed introduction of their child and the lack of development in the MC's feelings toward them felt like a missed opportunity.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
(This section contains potential spoilers regarding the plot and ending of "Priest.")
Specifically, the MC's initial resentment towards the egg (their child) due to its connection to the evil god felt underdeveloped. The quick resolution in the final extra left me wanting more exploration of this complex dynamic.
Final Verdict
Despite its problematic elements and uneven pacing, "Priest" is a memorable and thought-provoking read. It's a dark fantasy romance that challenges conventional notions of love and sacrifice. If you're willing to navigate the morally ambiguous landscape and confront potentially triggering content, you might find yourself surprisingly captivated by this unconventional love story. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
