My Thoughts on Overlimit Skill Holder
"Overlimit Skill Holder" promised a unique take on the isekai genre, and after diving in, I have mixed feelings. It's a story with definite strengths, but also some stumbling blocks that held it back from reaching its full potential.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a protagonist with an overpowered skill that he actually has to learn to control. The early chapters paint a picture of a harsh world where our young MC starts off weak, vulnerable, and burdened by a difficult past. This setup had me hooked and ready to see him grow.
What Works Well
The world-building is definitely a strong point. It's moderate in scope, but allows the story to progress organically. The characters, for the most part, are reasonably interesting and have enough depth to keep me invested in their journeys. The action elements are also well-integrated, providing exciting moments without overshadowing the character development. The first arc, while slow, is necessary to establish the MC's growth and his relationships with those around him. While some found the MC annoying, others found him to be level headed and not abusing his powers.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore some of the recurring criticisms. The MC's "goody-two-shoes" nature grated on me at times. While some appreciate his selflessness, I found it veered into unrealistic territory, lacking the nuance and complexity that would make him truly relatable. I also noticed a lack of clear goals or ambitions, leaving me wondering where the story was ultimately headed. And while the story sets up the MC's sister, it seems like she doesn't get enough attention.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed disappointment in romantic choices made further into the story, specifically the choice of one love interest over another. Others felt that the author had a tendency to kill off interesting characters before they could reach their full potential.
Final Verdict
"Overlimit Skill Holder" is a decent read, especially if you enjoy character-driven stories with moderate action and a focus on growth. However, the MC's sometimes frustrating personality and the occasional pacing issues prevent it from being a truly outstanding novel. I'd recommend it for casual reading, but with the caveat that you might need some patience to get through the initial hurdles.
