My Thoughts on Mythical Creatures Series 1: Ah-Jiang

This novel was quite the ride! "Mythical Creatures Series 1: Ah-Jiang" definitely kept me hooked with its blend of drama, romance, and supernatural elements set against the backdrop of ancient China. It's a story of enduring love, but also one that doesn't shy away from angst and emotional turmoil.

First Impressions

From the get-go, the premise grabbed my attention. The mix of historical and modern timelines, coupled with the xuanhuan elements, created a unique and intriguing world. I was immediately invested in the relationship between the MC and ML, eager to see how their love would unfold across lifetimes.

What Works Well

I particularly enjoyed the intricate plot and the dynamic between the main characters. The author did a great job of portraying their flaws and unique personalities, making them feel realistic and relatable. The first arc, in particular, was incredibly well-written, drawing me into their world and making me care deeply about their fate. Many readers praised the world-building and the author's ability to weave together a compelling narrative filled with emotional conflicts and resolutions. The supernatural elements added a delicious layer of forbidden romance, making the story even more captivating.

Areas of Concern

While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I did have some reservations. I noticed several reviewers mentioned that the pacing felt rushed at times, particularly in the second arc. This led to some confusion about character motivations and left certain emotional explanations feeling incomplete. The ending, while ultimately happy, also felt somewhat unfulfilled, leaving me wanting more closure and fluff. Some readers also pointed out that the MC's characterization as a "white lotus" could be frustrating, as his excessive kindness sometimes seemed to come at the expense of his relationship with the ML.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers expressed concerns about plot points in the arcs, and how they affected their view of the characters actions.

Final Verdict

Overall, "Mythical Creatures Series 1: Ah-Jiang" is a worthwhile read for fans of xuanhuan, historical romance, and supernatural stories. Despite some pacing issues and a somewhat underwhelming ending, the novel's strengths – its compelling plot, well-developed characters, and exploration of enduring love – make it a memorable and emotionally engaging experience. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions, but ultimately, it's a journey worth taking. I'd recommend it, but with the caveat that you might be left wanting more sweetness and a more fleshed-out resolution.

Synopsis

Constable Shi Tou of An Ling District is a tall, strong, and handsome young lad with good martial skills. But ever since he’d been ordered to exorcise a ghost at Pu River, he became the well-known “nemesis”, of wives within the entire district! Any bride that was about to go through the wedding ceremony with him would either die from an accident or go missing with no evidence of whether they were still alive or not. And so, Shi Tou could only obediently go pay his apologies and implore the high and mighty River Lord to not cut off his line of generation! So as he wished, Shi Tou got a first-class, ferociously beautiful──man! The beauty had wide shoulders and large hands, he also seemed to be taller than him. His skin was as white as cold snow as if he was some kind of demon or ghost. The gorgeous looks of the beauty that would make one awed seemed to lure Shi Tou…in love… As the saying goes, wildflowers from the side of the road should not be picked. When the beauty came up to his door again, Shi Tou realized the deep affection he received was a ferocious one where no one within thousands of hundred of years could receive! “──For the safety of other’s lives, this benefactor, please…just obediently marry him!”
