My Thoughts on My Ideal Town
My Ideal Town is a web novel that really took me by surprise. Going in, I expected something light and fluffy, but what I found was a deeply engaging story about hope, humanity, and the blurred lines between good and evil. It’s a journey through a devastated world, but one that ultimately left me feeling uplifted.
First Impressions
The initial summary definitely undersells the complexity of the story. It hints at something sillier than what unfolds. I quickly realized I was in for a much more intricate and emotionally resonant experience than I anticipated. The premise of a numb protagonist, Mu Sichen, entering a game pod and finding himself trapped was immediately compelling.
What Works Well
The world-building is phenomenal. Each town Mu Sichen conquers feels distinct and unique, contributing to a seamless overarching narrative. I especially appreciated how the author, Cyan Wings, uses game elements like a ranking system and puzzles to offset the darker horror themes. It keeps the story engaging without becoming overly bleak.
The characters are another strong point. Mu Sichen is a relatable and admirable protagonist, and his slow-burn romance with Qin Zhou, an initially cold god, is a sweet counterpoint to the intense action. I found myself particularly drawn to Qin Zhou's octopus form, which is undeniably adorable. The theme of the gods' descent into madness was also captivating.
The story's exploration of the Nietzschean idea of "staring into the abyss" is particularly well done. The idea that the more time you spend with monsters, the more likely you are to become one yourself, resonates deeply within the narrative.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, some aspects could be improved. The pacing can be uneven, with some arcs feeling longer than necessary. The repetitive nature of completing pillars in each town can become tiresome. Also, the romance is a little sparse.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
A few readers mentioned that the death of Professor Lu was quite shocking and that certain antagonist arcs stood out.
Final Verdict
Overall, My Ideal Town is a must-read for fans of adventure, horror, and supernatural stories with a touch of romance. It's a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant journey that will stay with you long after you finish reading. I highly recommend it, especially if you're looking for something with depth and meaning.
