My Thoughts on Let Me Live!
"Let Me Live!" is a novel that initially grabbed me with its intriguing premise: a world where people who have taken their own lives are given a second chance, not at life, but at a chance to apply for absolute death. The concept alone is dark, thought-provoking, and ripe with potential. While the execution wasn't always perfect, I found myself invested in the journey.
First Impressions
The early chapters were a strong draw. The world-building, particularly the game mechanics reminiscent of Werewolf, was fascinating. I was immediately curious about Sheng Canyang and Hai Ri, especially their dynamic. Hai Ri's devotion to Sheng Canyang was evident from the start, and I was eager to understand the reasons behind it. The initial mysteries surrounding the characters and the world kept me hooked, making me want to know more.
What Works Well
The novel's exploration of mental health is a significant strength. The author delves into the complexities of depression and suicide with a sensitivity that resonated with me. The characters felt real, and their struggles were portrayed in a nuanced way. Sheng Canyang, in particular, was a compelling character, and I appreciated the author's willingness to show the darker aspects of his mental state. I also enjoyed the unique blend of genres – the dark themes were often balanced with humor, creating a surprisingly engaging reading experience.
Areas of Concern
As I progressed through the story, I did encounter some issues. The plot became convoluted, and I noticed inconsistencies that detracted from my overall enjoyment. Some of the plot twists felt contrived, and the ending was abrupt. I felt that the author introduced new elements that weren't fully explored, leaving me with unanswered questions. The "Werewolf" style games, while initially interesting, became repetitive.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers found the second half less satisfying than the first, citing plot holes and character inconsistencies. There were concerns about Hai Ri's character development, with some feeling that his personality changed significantly after certain reveals. The romance, while initially appealing, seemed rushed to some, especially the sudden shift in Hai Ri's feelings.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Let Me Live!" is a novel that I would still recommend with caveats. It's a story that tackles difficult themes with sensitivity and offers moments of genuine insight. While the plot may falter at times, the characters are well-developed, and the exploration of mental health is commendable. If you're looking for a lighthearted read, this isn't it. But if you're willing to delve into a dark and thought-provoking world, "Let Me Live!" might be worth your time. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride.
