My Thoughts on Estranged
"Estranged" is a xianxia novel that pulled me in with its intriguing premise of a master and his estranged disciples. With a blend of action, adventure, drama, romance, and even a touch of yaoi, it promised a rich and complex story. While it largely delivered on that promise, there were a few elements that held it back from being a true standout in the genre for me.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were captivating. I was immediately drawn into the mystery surrounding Jiufang Changming's return and the circumstances of his past. The author's writing style, which many readers have described as beautiful and fluid, certainly contributed to this. I found myself eager to uncover the truth behind the broken relationships between the master and his disciples.
What Works Well
The world-building is a strong point. The author weaves a detailed and believable cultivation world, filled with intricate power systems and fascinating characters. I particularly enjoyed the exploration of Daoism and Buddhism, which added depth to the battle sequences and overall narrative. Several readers have praised the translator's work, noting the helpful footnotes and explanations of idioms, which made the reading experience even more immersive. The plot is also engaging, and while slow burn, the slow reveal of the mysteries surrounding the characters kept me hooked.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciated the complexity of the plot, I can understand why some readers found it convoluted. There's a large cast of characters, and keeping track of everyone's motivations and relationships can be challenging. I also noticed that the pacing sometimes felt uneven, with certain arcs dragging on while others felt rushed. Some have also noted that the romance between the main characters takes a while to develop, and may not be to the liking of all readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed that the amount of focus on side characters felt like it took away from the plot and the development of the main characters. Some found the female side character annoying for the amount of time she was on the page, and the things she did on the page.
Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "Estranged." It's a well-written and engaging xianxia novel with a compelling mystery and interesting characters. While the plot can be a bit convoluted at times and the pacing uneven, the strengths of the story outweigh its weaknesses. If you're a fan of slow-burn romances, complex world-building, and intricate plots, then "Estranged" is definitely worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
