My Thoughts on Kikanshita Yuusha no Gojitsudan
"Kikanshita Yuusha no Gojitsudan" – or "The Hero Who Returned Remains Afterwards" – had me intrigued from the start with its premise of a hero returning to a normal life. I jumped in hoping for a unique take on the 'isekai return' trope, and while it has some interesting elements, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the protagonist's grounded reactions to being back in his own world. I appreciated that he wasn't overly dramatic or dense, and his concerns about reintegrating into society felt relatable. The early chapters set a promising tone.
What Works Well
The slice-of-life aspects are definitely a strong point. The novel shines when it focuses on the everyday scenarios and the protagonist's interactions with the colorful cast of characters around him. The comedy, while sometimes relying on familiar tropes, often lands well, providing some genuinely amusing moments. The action, when it appears, is paced well and enjoyable. Several readers also noted that the translation quality is quite good, which certainly enhances the reading experience.
Areas of Concern
While the initial naturalism of the MC was appreciated, his density later became a point of frustration. The overabundance of women attracted to him, combined with his complete obliviousness, felt forced and detracted from the story. I also noticed a few instances where the plot felt underdeveloped, and certain arcs seemed to lack a clear purpose.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out instances of characters being introduced with detailed backstories, only to be rejected or neglected by the MC later on. This can be particularly jarring in a story tagged as a harem, where readers generally expect a different outcome.
Final Verdict
"Kikanshita Yuusha no Gojitsudan" has its moments, particularly if you're a fan of slice-of-life stories with a former hero twist. However, the dense protagonist, underdeveloped plot points, and reliance on certain tropes can be a drawback. If you're looking for a light read with a focus on comedy and everyday interactions, this might be worth checking out. Just be aware that it might not fully deliver on the harem aspects, and the protagonist's density might test your patience.
