My Thoughts on Juvenile Medical God

Juvenile Medical God definitely grabbed my attention with its blend of modern-day setting and classic wuxia elements. The idea of a high school student navigating the criminal underworld with poison and martial arts skills is certainly a unique selling point. While it has some flaws, there's a lot to enjoy in this story, making it a decent read for fans of the genre.

First Impressions

Initially, I was a bit thrown off by the lack of immediate backstory for the main character, Qin Lang. Jumping straight into his life as a poison expert with a hidden master felt a bit jarring. However, I quickly got used to it and found myself intrigued by his motivations and the world around him. The early parts of the story felt a bit slow, almost like a slice-of-life, but as the plot develops, it becomes more engaging.

What Works Well

The modern xianxia setting is brilliantly executed, offering a refreshing change from the typical ancient world cultivation stories. Qin Lang's character is also a major highlight. He's not your typical hero; he's a bit of a scoundrel, looking out for himself, which makes him more relatable and believable. I found the blend of action, comedy, and even some romance elements to be well-balanced, keeping me entertained throughout. The fight scenes are well-detailed, and I appreciate the MC using self-created martial arts. The way Qin Lang builds his connections and influence, from blackmailing politicians to forming alliances with various factions, is fascinating to watch.

Areas of Concern

I did find some aspects of the story a little problematic. The early translation quality was a bit rough, with some sentences being difficult to understand, but thankfully, it improves later on. Additionally, the female lead's characterization seemed a bit inconsistent, and I can see why some readers might find her annoying. Some also found the main character to be dumb, and that his cultivation didn't progress enough.

Final Verdict

Overall, I'd say Juvenile Medical God is an underrated gem. It’s a fun and engaging read that offers a unique twist on the modern xianxia genre. While it has some flaws, the strengths of the story, particularly the interesting setting, compelling characters, and well-executed action scenes, make it worth checking out. If you're looking for something different from the usual cultivation fare, I'd recommend giving this one a try.

Synopsis

The King of Hell sentences you to death by midnight, but I can ensure that you live past morning. The young man, Qin Lang, received the inheritance of a poison school by chance. He uses poison to kill people, uses poison to save people and he uses poison to chase beauties. With body of ancient extinct poison and a body of a martial artist, he walks around the city, and wanders around in the underworld.
