My Thoughts on InterStellar Dad
"InterStellar Dad" promised a unique blend of sci-fi, romance, and slice-of-life, and after diving in, I can see why it's garnered a dedicated following. It's a story that sparks conversation, even if some of those conversations are a bit heated.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: a modern woman transmigrates to an interstellar future where gender roles and family structures are drastically different. The initial world-building is captivating, painting a picture of a technologically advanced society with a unique perspective on relationships and parenthood. I was immediately drawn in by the promise of exploring these themes through the eyes of someone struggling to adapt.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the strong female lead, Jiang Miao. She's rational, intelligent, and principled, making her a compelling character to follow. I appreciated her internal conflict as she grapples with the values of this new world, especially her longing for the family connections she remembers from Earth. The male lead, He Yan, also has his charms. His character arc, though unconventional, resonated with me as he grows into his role as a father. The story's ability to evoke emotions is a definite strength, with several readers mentioning shedding tears and feeling deeply invested in the characters' journeys. The plot twists kept me on my toes, and the author's writing style is engaging and immersive. I also enjoyed the exploration of potential future societal norms and the commentary on the human condition.
Areas of Concern
While I generally enjoyed the novel, some aspects gave me pause. The heavy emphasis on "gene optimization" and its implications raised some serious ethical concerns for me. It felt uncomfortably close to eugenics at times, and the story's seeming endorsement of this concept was troubling. I also found the portrayal of gender roles, particularly the reinforcement of stereotypes, to be a step backward. While the story aims for gender equality, some of the justifications and explanations felt contradictory and problematic.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Proceed with caution! This section contains spoilers.
A significant plot twist involves He Yan's true identity and his actions that impact Jiang Miao and their child. While this added depth to the story, it also frustrated some readers, who felt it was out of character and poorly timed. The ending, while unique, also divided opinions. Some found it satisfying, while others felt it left them wanting more.
Final Verdict
"InterStellar Dad" is a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging novel with a unique premise and strong characters. However, its exploration of certain themes, particularly eugenics and gender roles, may be off-putting to some readers. Despite its flaws, I found it to be a worthwhile read, sparking reflection and prompting me to consider the complexities of the future and the enduring power of human connection. I'd recommend it with a caveat: be prepared to confront some challenging ideas and potentially disagree with the story's perspective.
