My Thoughts on The Cubs Picked Up Are All Villains
Alright, buckle up, because this novel was quite the ride! I went in expecting a fluffy, feel-good story about a guy adopting some cute critters, and while there's definitely a good dose of heartwarming moments, it ended up being so much more complex than I anticipated.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a weapons designer transmigrating to a sci-fi world and becoming a dad to a bunch of abandoned "cubs." The early chapters were definitely sweet, focusing on the MC's caring nature and his resourcefulness in providing for his new family. I quickly grew attached to the cubs and the quirky robot, 09.
What Works Well
The world-building is surprisingly well-developed, with political struggles and fractional divisions adding depth to the narrative. I particularly enjoyed the MC's character; he's intelligent, capable, and not overly arrogant. He's a "dad" through and through, and his dedication to his cubs is genuinely touching. The cubs themselves are charming and each has a compelling, complex backstory. I found myself invested in their growth and development. The ML is also a refreshing change from the typical cold, overbearing type. He's sweet, a bit shy, and his interactions with the MC are often amusing.
Areas of Concern
I did have a few minor gripes. The pacing felt a bit rushed at times, and some of the technical details, especially regarding mecha and technology, could have been fleshed out more. Also, I felt that the "consciousness of the universe" explanation felt a bit like a convenient plot device.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, heads up, there are some potential spoilers ahead!
Some readers felt that the romantic relationship between the MC and ML developed a bit too quickly, considering the ML was initially one of the cubs. Some readers felt that the MC's zerg identity was not fully explored. The ending of the story was divisive for some, with some readers loving the closure it provided and others wishing for a different outcome for certain characters.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed The Cubs Picked Up Are All Villains. It's a heartwarming and engaging story with a well-developed world, likable characters, and a surprisingly complex plot. If you're looking for a read that combines fluff with political intrigue and found-family dynamics, this one is definitely worth checking out.
