My Thoughts on I Am the Fated Villain

"I Am the Fated Villain" grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise: a protagonist who actively hunts down and thwarts those overpowered, lucky protagonists we're so used to seeing in xuanhuan novels. The idea of turning the tables and seeing the "chosen ones" get their comeuppance was definitely appealing, and overall, I found the novel to be an enjoyable, if imperfect, read.

First Impressions

From the start, the novel sets itself apart. Gu Changge, our protagonist, is cunning, manipulative, and embraces his villainous role with gusto. He's not some reluctant anti-hero; he enjoys exploiting the flaws and predictable behaviors of those stereotypical "sons of heaven." This meta approach, where Gu Changge uses his knowledge of common web novel tropes against his enemies, is initially quite clever and entertaining. The power system, while not particularly unique, serves its purpose in facilitating Gu Changge's schemes.

What Works Well

The characterization, particularly of the side characters, is a strong point. They have distinct personalities and motivations, and their reactions to Gu Changge's actions create a satisfying level of tension and payoff. The scheming is also a major draw. It evolves beyond simple cat-and-mouse games, becoming a complex web of deception where Gu Changge plays a high-stakes game of impostor against the entire cultivation world. When the novel is firing on all cylinders, it delivers those "big brain" moments that are so satisfying to experience as a reader.

Areas of Concern

However, the novel isn't without its flaws. Some readers might find Gu Changge too perfect, lacking vulnerabilities or genuine challenges. I also noticed the plot can become repetitive. The initial thrill of seeing stereotypical protagonists defeated can wear off as the story progresses, especially when the "sons of luck" start to feel generic and indistinguishable. The quality of the translation is also a recurring concern. Multiple readers have mentioned inconsistencies and a decline in quality after a certain point, which can significantly impact the reading experience.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some plot developments have also drawn criticism. The handling of certain female characters, particularly the instances of manipulation and Stockholm syndrome-like situations, were brought up as problematic. The fact that the MC doesn't ever kill the female protagonists, but is quick to eliminate male characters, is also something to consider.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "I Am the Fated Villain" offers a unique and often satisfying twist on the xuanhuan genre. If you're looking for a novel with a ruthless, cunning protagonist who actively subverts common tropes, this might be worth a read. Just be aware of the potential pitfalls regarding translation quality and the handling of certain plot elements.

Synopsis

Immediately after Gu Changge realized he had transgressed into a fantasy world, the world’s protagonist, and fortune’s chosen, vowed to take revenge on him. Envied by all, he not only has the female lead head over heels for him but he’s also treated as a distinguished guest wherever he goes. Fortunately, Gu Changge’s prestige and power are superior to everyone else’s, so shouldn’t it be easy to trample on a mere fortune’s chosen? Hold on… There’s a system dedicated to milking and harvesting from the protagonist? Gu Change smirked. “Seems like even fate wants me to fulfill my destiny as the Villain of this world!”
