My Thoughts on He Became a Salted Fish After Inheriting Millions of Secret Arts
This novel certainly had a unique title that grabbed my attention, and diving in, I found a blend of genres that was both intriguing and, at times, a little uneven. It's a completed story, which is always a plus, and set in a magical, steampunk-infused Victorian England.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were a bit slow for me, and I can see why some readers found the MC, Duan FeiZhou, a bit frustrating at first. He inherits this massive secret arts inheritance and, initially, his reaction felt immature to some, like a kid wanting the candy (powers) without the responsibility. However, I appreciated that he wasn't instantly OP; he had to learn and adapt, which made his journey more relatable.
What Works Well
The world-building is definitely a strong point. The author clearly did their research on Victorian Britain and then added a delightful occult twist. The mysteries are engaging, and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat, especially as it delved deeper into conspiracies and hidden identities. I also enjoyed the supporting cast; they felt like individuals with their own stories to tell, adding depth to the overall narrative. Several readers mentioned the humor, and I agree; it helped balance the darker elements of the story nicely. The translation is also excellent, making it an easy and enjoyable read. The action and mystery, blended with the Victorian setting, create a compelling atmosphere.
Areas of Concern
The romance between the MC and ML (Z) seems to be a point of contention for many readers. While some enjoyed the slow burn and subtle build-up, others felt it was rushed or lacked genuine chemistry. I can see both sides. The ML's initial coldness, while understandable given his role, made it harder to see the connection develop organically. Some readers felt the ML's change toward the MC was too abrupt, and the reasons for his feelings were not clearly explained.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out similarities to "Lord of the Mysteries" (LOTM). While I don't think it's a blatant copy, the shared steampunk-Victorian setting and certain plot elements might feel familiar to those who've read LOTM. However, others argue that the similarities are superficial and that "Salted Fish" stands on its own.
Final Verdict
Overall, "He Became a Salted Fish After Inheriting Millions of Secret Arts" is a fun and engaging read. The unique blend of genres, the well-developed world, and the intriguing plot make it worth checking out. While the romance might not be everyone's cup of tea, the strong world-building and compelling mysteries more than make up for it. I'd recommend it, especially if you're looking for a shorter, completed novel with a unique twist on the steampunk genre.
