My Thoughts on Genius Fundamentals
"Genius Fundamentals" had been sitting on my "to read" list for a while, and I finally dove in. Honestly? I'm glad I did. It's not your typical school-life romance, and it definitely offers something unique.
First Impressions
The initial hook is strong. The premise of time travel and parallel worlds, combined with a focus on mathematics, immediately piqued my interest. I was a bit wary of the math aspect, fearing it might be overwhelming, but the author integrates it organically into the story. I also appreciated the focus on the protagonist's (FL) relationship with her father, Lin, which adds an emotional depth often missing in similar novels.
What Works Well
The characters are a huge strength. The FL is intelligent and relatable, grappling with self-doubt and striving for growth. The male lead (ML) isn't the typical aloof genius; he's supportive and has his own set of challenges. Even the so-called "villains" are multifaceted with understandable motivations. Many readers praised the depth of the characters, and I have to agree. They felt incredibly real and human.
I also particularly loved the strong focus on family and friendship. The love and support the FL receives from her loved ones is a consistent theme, and the romance, while slow-burn, feels genuine and grounded in everyday interactions. The author also did a great job weaving in the mystery surrounding the FL's father. I found myself constantly trying to piece together the puzzle of his past.
Areas of Concern
I did encounter some criticisms regarding the realism of the Olympiad training, with one reader finding the teaching methods unrealistic. While this didn't detract too much from my overall enjoyment, it's worth noting for readers who are particularly sensitive to such details. Others may find the slow-burn romance a bit frustrating, craving more "dogfood" moments.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers discussed plot points related to the parallel worlds and the FL's experiences in them. Proceed with caution if you prefer to go in completely blind. There are also mentions of the FL's relationship with the ML and her feelings towards him.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Genius Fundamentals" to be a refreshing and thought-provoking read. It's a well-written story with compelling characters, an intriguing plot, and a satisfying resolution. While there are a few minor flaws, the strengths of the novel far outweigh them. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a unique blend of school life, romance, mystery, and a touch of sci-fi. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
