My Thoughts on Fugui Ronghua
"Fugui Ronghua" is a completed historical gender bender novel, and I went in with high expectations. Overall, it was an interesting read, though not without its flaws. The slice-of-life nature and the unique perspective of the protagonist definitely kept me engaged, but some aspects left me wanting more.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed my attention: a modern man transmigrating into the body of a young girl in ancient China. The initial chapters were promising, setting the stage for a potentially relaxing and drama-free story. I was intrigued by the MC's seemingly pragmatic approach to adapting to his new life.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the peaceful and calming atmosphere of the novel, and I have to agree. The story largely avoids overly dramatic conflicts, focusing instead on the MC's daily life as a wife and mother. I found the MC's detached and rational approach to the harem setting quite refreshing. Instead of engaging in petty squabbles, he prioritizes his own well-being and the upbringing of his children.
I also appreciated the author's attention to detail when depicting aspects of ancient Chinese society. The interactions between characters, particularly the MC and his children, felt genuine and heartwarming. The unique perspective of a modern man navigating the constraints of a patriarchal society offered a fresh take on the historical genre.
Areas of Concern
However, I also found some aspects of the novel less appealing. The MC's detachment, while initially intriguing, sometimes came across as apathetic and even condescending. I couldn't help but feel that the story missed an opportunity to explore the emotional complexities of the MC's situation.
Additionally, the lack of character development for the male lead was a bit disappointing. While he undergoes some changes throughout the story, he often feels overshadowed by the MC's strong personality. I would have liked to see more depth and nuance in his character.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers pointed out the MC's seemingly misogynistic views, even after transmigrating into a female body. The MC's internal monologues sometimes reveal a dismissive attitude towards women and their concerns, which can be jarring and uncomfortable for some readers. This is a major point of contention, with some viewing it as a flaw in the character and others as a reflection of the societal norms of the time.
Final Verdict
Despite its shortcomings, "Fugui Ronghua" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a unique and unconventional historical novel. The calm pace, the pragmatic protagonist, and the glimpses into ancient Chinese society make it an engaging experience. Just be aware of the potential for some uncomfortable moments due to the MC's detached perspective and occasional misogynistic undertones. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
