My Thoughts on Frostbite

"Frostbite" is a web novel that definitely left an impression on me. Diving into this story, I knew I was in for a rollercoaster, and boy, was I right. It’s a coming-of-age tale centered around two young men navigating first love amidst some truly difficult circumstances.

First Impressions

Initially, I was charmed by the classic trope of the "cutie in love shou x cold silent gong." The early romance is sweet, and I found myself smiling at the MC's initial crush and the "kilig" moments that came with it. The slice-of-life aspects and the fun banter from side characters like Li Balei (who I'm told is a queen!) added a lightness that balanced the heavier themes to come.

What Works Well

The strength of "Frostbite" lies in its characterizations and the emotional depth of the story. The novel really shines in portraying the slow burn of first love and the complexities of the characters' relationship. I found myself invested in the characters and their struggles, especially the male lead's journey through familial abuse. The author does a good job of making you care about these characters, flaws and all, as they fumble their way through growing up and falling in love. I also love how the MC is such a caring person who brings light into the ML's dark world.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the novel overall, I can see why some readers might have reservations. The MC's initial shallowness and obsession with the ML's appearance might rub some people the wrong way. Also, the ending is a bit of a downer, especially because the ML is in prison. It might feel like a tragedy, but the translator has also said that the sequel will continue their story after the ML is released, so there's that to look forward to.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Okay, let's talk about the ending. The male lead ends up in prison for killing his ab*sive father. While many readers felt this was a fitting end for the father, the open ending, with the MC waiting for the ML, left some wanting more closure. However, it's worth noting that there's a sequel in the works that will hopefully explore their reunion.

Final Verdict

Despite its heavier themes and potentially frustrating moments, "Frostbite" is a worthwhile read if you're a fan of angsty, slow-burn romances with complex characters. Just be prepared to shed a few tears along the way. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis

You are the piercing ache of my devotion. – Translator’s summary: 16-year-old Lin Xigu transfers to a new school where he encounters the enigmatic She Xiao, a silent, vicious and seemingly unapproachable problem student. All Lin Xigu sees is how beautiful he is.
