My Thoughts on Female General And Eldest Princess

"Female General And Eldest Princess" promised a blend of action, political intrigue, and yuri romance set in ancient China, and after diving in, I can definitely see why it has such a dedicated following. It's a compelling story, though not without its flaws.

First Impressions

The initial chapters hooked me immediately. The premise of a woman disguising herself as her twin brother to join the army and seek revenge is classic Mulan territory, but the addition of a cold, scheming princess throws a fascinating wrench into the works. I was eager to see how their relationship would unfold amidst the backdrop of war and political maneuvering.

What Works Well

The character development, especially for Lin Wanyue, is a major strength. Her journey from a vengeful soldier to a respected general is believable and engaging. I found myself invested in her growth and admired her determination. The slow-burn romance is also a highlight. The novel doesn't rush the relationship between Wanyue and the princess, Li Xian, which makes their eventual connection feel more authentic. The political intrigue is well-crafted, with plenty of scheming and power plays to keep you guessing. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the world-building and the complexities of the characters' motivations.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the overall story, I can see why some readers felt let down by the latter half. The pacing becomes uneven, and some plot points feel rushed or underdeveloped. The romance, while initially compelling, suffers from a lack of communication and some questionable decisions by the characters. I also felt that some of the side characters could have been fleshed out more, as they often felt like plot devices rather than fully realized individuals.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have expressed concerns about the portrayal of the princess, Li Xian. Her manipulative tendencies and ruthless actions can be off-putting, and some have questioned whether she truly deserves Wanyue's love. The ending has also been a point of contention, with some finding it unsatisfying and rushed. The plot point of the princess being revealed to be a cold-blooded murderer was jarring, and I can understand why readers felt it undermined the relationship development.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Female General And Eldest Princess" is a worthwhile read for those who enjoy historical fiction, political intrigue, and wlw romance. The strong character development, compelling plot, and well-written prose make it a memorable story. Just be prepared for some angst, uneven pacing, and a potentially divisive ending. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and appreciating the journey, even if the destination isn't perfect.

Synopsis

In order to survive in troubled times; in order to get revenge for loved ones; in order to claim justice for all 118 people who died undeservedly in the village. Lin WanYue took the residence registration of her younger brother Lin FeiXing to join the army, and was determined to kill the Huns all over the world. The empress died at court, leaving the 16 year-old princess and the 8-year-old crown prince to rely upon each other for their lives. Several princes older than the crown prince were greedy for the throne, and the two were in a precarious position.
