Who it's for, and whether it holds up.
My Thoughts on Everlasting Immortal Firmament
"Everlasting Immortal Firmament" definitely grabbed my attention, and it seems to have done the same for many others, judging by its solid rating. However, diving deeper, I found myself agreeing with some of the mixed sentiments surrounding this Xianxia novel. It's a bit of a rollercoaster, with some seriously high peaks and some unfortunate dips.
First Impressions
The initial hook is undeniably strong. I was immediately intrigued by the concept of a protagonist who isn't a fresh-faced youth, but a seasoned, older strategist entering the cultivation world. The idea of a genius merchant who can seemingly conjure gold from nothing also sounded incredibly appealing. This unique starting point promised a refreshing departure from the usual Xianxia tropes.
What Works Well
The MC's intelligence and strategic prowess are, without a doubt, the strongest aspects of the story. I loved how he used his wit and experience to outmaneuver opponents, often turning the tables in seemingly impossible situations. The early arcs, focused on military strategy and kingdom building, were particularly engaging. It felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the typical "young master" face-slapping contests found in so many other novels. The world-building is also quite interesting, drawing inspiration from Chinese mythology and presenting a cultivation system that, while initially confusing, becomes increasingly fascinating as the story progresses.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the initial promise doesn't always hold. I found myself sympathizing with readers who felt the plot became generic and repetitive as the story progressed. The MC's reliance on allies and plot armor in later arcs diminishes the impact of his earlier strategic brilliance. It's disappointing to see a cunning protagonist fall into predictable traps and rely on convenient rescues. The portrayal of other characters also becomes a problem. Many of them seem to exist solely to highlight the MC's intelligence, often making incredibly questionable decisions that defy logic. This can make the world feel less believable and more like a stage for the MC to shine.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out specific plot points that they found particularly frustrating, such as the frequent capture of female characters and the repetitive cycle of betrayal and resurrection. These elements, while potentially adding drama, ultimately contribute to a sense of stagnation and predictability.
Final Verdict
"Everlasting Immortal Firmament" is a novel with a lot of potential that, in my opinion, isn't always fully realized. The strong start, intelligent MC, and unique premise are definitely worth checking out. However, be prepared for a shift in tone and quality as the story progresses. If you're looking for a Xianxia novel with a focus on strategy and a mature protagonist, this might be worth a read, just keep your expectations in check. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, maybe around a 3.5/5.
