My Thoughts on Ze Tian Ji
"Ze Tian Ji" (Way of Choices) is a novel that's been on my radar for a while, and after diving in, I've emerged with a mix of appreciation and frustration. It’s a story that clearly has a dedicated following, but it's also one that demands patience and a specific taste.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a stoic protagonist, Chen Changsheng, who defies fate despite a terminal illness. The world-building is intricate, and the writing style is undeniably beautiful. However, it quickly became apparent that this is a story that prioritizes character development and detailed descriptions over breakneck pacing.
What Works Well
Many readers have praised the depth of the characters, and I agree. They aren't just cardboard cutouts; they have their own motivations, flaws, and backstories that feel surprisingly realistic. The author takes their time fleshing out the world, and in general, I found it refreshing. The MC isn't overpowered from the start, and his intelligence and calm demeanor make him a compelling protagonist. The story is about people, choices and fate, and the author does a great job of making the characters relatable.
Areas of Concern
Now, for the drawbacks. The pacing is often described as "slow," and that's putting it mildly. There are instances where entire chapters are dedicated to describing a single action or conversation, which can feel tedious. Some have mentioned that the plot meanders, losing focus on the central conflict. I also noticed that some found the ending unsatisfying, with characters being sidelined or plot threads left unresolved. The romance, while initially promising, apparently fizzles out, which is a disappointment.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed their frustration that the MC and heroine do not marry at the end of the novel.
Final Verdict
"Ze Tian Ji" is a unique xuanhuan novel with a lot to offer, but it's not for everyone. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed read, you might want to look elsewhere. However, if you appreciate detailed world-building, well-developed characters, and a story that takes its time, then this might be worth a try. Just be prepared for a slow burn and potential disappointment with the ending. Overall, I'd recommend it with reservations.
