My Thoughts on Era of Disaster
"Era of Disaster" presents a post-apocalyptic New Zealand, a setting ripe with potential. I went into this novel hoping for a thrilling survival story, and while I found some aspects engaging, others left me wanting. The premise itself is intriguing – a disaster limited to a specific geographical location, forcing humanity to adapt and evolve.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the idea of a protagonist who isn't overpowered, someone who has to genuinely struggle to survive. This felt like a refreshing change from the typical power fantasy. The early chapters painted a picture of a world where danger lurks around every corner, and the characters' choices actually mattered.
What Works Well
I appreciated the author's attempts to inject realism into the narrative. The idea that characters can die unexpectedly, even if they're close to the MC, adds a layer of tension and keeps you guessing. The antagonist being portrayed as capable and intelligent, rather than a generic villain, was also a welcome change. I also found the development of the evolution system to be reasonably well thought out. The power-ups and abilities felt somewhat logical within the context of the story, avoiding the common pitfall of arbitrary power scaling. For those tired of predictable plots, this novel offers a different flavor.
Areas of Concern
However, I did find some significant issues that detracted from my overall enjoyment. The pacing felt uneven, with lengthy descriptions of biological processes sometimes bogging down the story. I also found myself questioning the realism of certain character behaviors, particularly the MC's unwavering willingness to forgive and give second chances, even in life-or-death situations. This sometimes made him seem more like a pushover than a leader. The constant cycle of fighting the antagonist, losing characters, and escaping only to repeat the process felt repetitive and frustrating after a while. The plot, at times, seemed forced, and betrayals lacked adequate foreshadowing. I also found some issues with the geography of the region in the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out that characters you grow attached to have a high likelihood of being killed off. The antagonist also seems to escape consequences repeatedly.
Final Verdict
"Era of Disaster" has some interesting ideas and attempts to break away from typical web novel tropes. However, issues with pacing, character consistency, and repetitive plot elements ultimately hold it back. While it might appeal to readers seeking a less predictable apocalypse story, be prepared for a bumpy ride. I'd give it a 3/5.
