My Thoughts on Druid Immortal Clan
Alright, let's dive into "Druid Immortal Clan." I went in with some expectations, especially with that title, and came out with a mixed bag of feelings. It's definitely a novel that has potential, but also some significant drawbacks that I think potential readers should be aware of.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the world-building. The early chapters create a believable setting, particularly the clan-building aspect, which reminded me of "Mirror Legacy." The idea of a mortal-turned-cultivation clan, struggling and growing, felt pretty original. I was eager to see how the druid powers would play into this traditional xianxia setting.
What Works Well
The clan-building aspect is definitely a highlight. Seeing the family grow and develop, especially in the early stages, was compelling. I also appreciated the mystery surrounding the cultivators and the MC's journey to find a path to immortality despite lacking spirit roots. This sets up some interesting challenges and makes the MC's resourcefulness a key part of the story. The revenge arcs and "face-slapping" moments, typical of the genre, were also satisfying.
Areas of Concern
However, the "druid" part of "Druid Immortal Clan" feels a bit tacked on. The druid abilities, fueled by a system, come across as random and arbitrary. The skills don't always align logically with the MC's actions, like gaining skills unrelated to planting trees after leveling up through…planting trees. It felt like the author was trying to shoehorn in litRPG elements without a clear vision.
The shift in focus as the story progresses is also a concern. The initial emphasis on the MC's immediate family and their struggles fades as the story moves to higher realms and focuses on subsequent generations. This made the earlier parts of the story feel somewhat abandoned.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be disappointed to learn that the MC is revealed to have no spirit roots early on. While this creates a unique challenge for him, it might deter readers who prefer a more traditional cultivation progression. Also, the convenient way the MC gains skills to compensate for his lack of spirit roots might feel like a plot contrivance.
Final Verdict
"Druid Immortal Clan" is a mixed bag. If you're a fan of xianxia with clan-building elements and don't mind a somewhat disjointed system, you might find something to enjoy here. However, the weak integration of the druid theme and the shifting focus might leave you feeling a bit disappointed. I'd say proceed with caution and be prepared for a story that starts strong but loses its way as it progresses. I'm giving it a tentative 3/5.
