My Thoughts on Disciplinary Code
"Disciplinary Code" is a mature romance that hooked me with its premise of a broken couple reuniting and attempting to rebuild their relationship. The story delves into the complexities of their past, their individual growth, and the challenges of rekindling a lost love. While the novel boasts several strengths, some aspects left me feeling a bit conflicted.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn to the "lovers reunited" trope and the promise of character growth. The initial setup, where the MC and ML find themselves on opposite sides of a lawsuit, felt like a compelling way to reignite their connection and force them to confront their unresolved issues. The "slice of life" aspect also appealed to me, promising a realistic and relatable story.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the novel for its mature approach to romance and the realistic portrayal of its characters. I particularly appreciated the focus on individual growth, especially for the MC, Ji Yao. Seeing him confront his flaws, take accountability for his actions, and actively pursue the ML, Jiang Heng, was refreshing. The story also shines in its depiction of their intimate moments, with Ji Yao often taking the initiative.
The author's nuanced portrayal of the characters' past traumas and their impact on the relationship is another strong point. The gradual rebuilding of trust and the exploration of their emotional baggage felt authentic and added depth to the narrative. The Hokkaido arc, where they revisit the place where their relationship began, was a highlight, filled with sweet and poignant moments.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed many aspects of the story, I also shared some of the concerns raised by other readers regarding the communication between the leads. At times, their reliance on tacit understanding and guesswork felt frustrating, especially when the ML's actions seemed to contradict his supposedly mature and rational nature. I felt that the ML's characterization could have been more consistent.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews discussed plot points that could be considered spoilers, including the circumstances of their breakup (the MC's fake engagement and the ML's reaction) and the specific arcs within the story (the lawsuit, the pretend lovers act, and the Hokkaido arc).
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Disciplinary Code" to be a worthwhile read. Despite some minor flaws in character consistency and communication, the novel's strengths—its mature themes, realistic portrayal of relationships, and focus on character growth—outweigh its weaknesses. If you enjoy mature romances with complex characters and a focus on healing and redemption, I recommend giving this novel a try. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
