My Thoughts on Devil
"Devil" was a novel I almost passed over, and I'm so glad I didn't! It's a unique blend of genres that really surprised me, and it's quickly become a favorite. This story isn't just about romance, though there is some there, it's about family, growth, and finding light in the darkest of places.
First Impressions
Admittedly, the beginning was a little rough. I found myself having to adjust to the writing style, which felt a bit slow-paced at first. But I quickly became invested in Ji Huan's life and his dedication to his family. The introduction of Black Egg, his nephew, was also a turning point for me. This mysterious little being is both cute and a little unsettling, adding a unique flavor to the story.
What Works Well
The heart of this novel is undoubtedly the characters and their relationships. Watching Ji Huan care for his grandfather and raise Black Egg is incredibly heartwarming. The author does a fantastic job of showing how these bonds develop and strengthen over time. I especially loved how Ji Huan's kindness and strength of character impact everyone around him, including the initially cold and aloof ML. The slow-burn romance was also well-executed, feeling natural and earned as the characters grew closer. The world-building is another strong point, with a well-developed supernatural setting that feels both original and immersive. The plot is engaging, and the author does a great job of foreshadowing events, making the story feel both surprising and satisfying.
Areas of Concern
If I had to nitpick, the early translations could use some improvement. However, I heard that there are re-translations available that make the story much more accessible. Also, readers looking for a fast-paced romance might be disappointed, as the focus is more on family and personal growth.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the ML's initial actions towards Ji Huan's family might be off-putting to some. He seems indifferent and even allows them to be captured at one point, which can be seen as an "asshole move." However, it's important to remember that he is a devil, and his perspective changes as he gets to know Ji Huan and Black Egg. Also, it seems that Black Egg's origins are never fully explained, which may leave some readers wanting more.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor drawbacks, "Devil" is a truly exceptional novel. It's a heartwarming, thought-provoking, and ultimately uplifting story about family, love, and finding your place in the world. I highly recommend giving it a try! I would rate this a 4.5/5
