My Thoughts on Cooking in the Monster Sanctuary
First Impressions
"Cooking in the Monster Sanctuary" immediately hooked me with its unique premise. A protagonist masquerading as a cook in what is essentially an SCP-esque organization? Sign me up! The blend of genres – fantasy, horror, romance, and supernatural – felt ambitious, but the initial chapters delivered a compelling mix that kept me turning the page. The idea of a "calm protagonist" navigating a world of demons, angels, and dungeons was instantly appealing.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its creative integration of myths and legends. I particularly enjoyed the way the author drew inspiration from Chinese and global folklore, breathing new life into familiar tales. The added twist of turning classic fairy tales into horror scenarios was a stroke of genius, adding a layer of unexpected darkness to the story. I found myself consistently surprised and delighted by the narrative turns. The "reverse harem" aspect, while not always my cup of tea, was handled with enough care that it didn't detract from my enjoyment. I will say, that there is a very clear Male Lead, and I enjoyed reading their interactions.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I do wish that the story was longer. I think that the characters and world were rich enough to have a much longer and more detailed story.
Final Verdict
"Cooking in the Monster Sanctuary" is a delightful and imaginative read that I would wholeheartedly recommend. Its fresh plot, engaging characters, and clever blend of genres make it a standout in the web novel landscape. If you're looking for a story that's both humorous and thrilling, with a dash of romance and a heavy dose of the supernatural, this is one you won't want to miss.
