My Thoughts on Butcher Fulang’s Noodle Shop
"Butcher Fulang’s Noodle Shop" promised a fluffy, feel-good story, and for the most part, it delivered. While it didn't blow me away with originality, it was a pleasant enough way to spend an afternoon. It’s a quick read, perfect for when you need something light after a heavier novel.
First Impressions
The premise is simple: a modern cook transmigrates to ancient times and opens a noodle shop. The main character, with his newfound ability to be pregnant (as a "ger"), quickly adapts to his new life. I appreciated that he wasn’t overly angsty about the changes, which allowed the story to move at a brisk pace. The male lead, an amnesiac butcher, is your typical stoic and doting love interest. The setup is familiar, but sometimes you just want a comforting cliché.
What Works Well
The story shines when it focuses on the food. The descriptions of the dishes are mouthwatering, and I found myself craving noodles more than once while reading. I also enjoyed the slice-of-life aspects. The story is at its best when it shows the MC building his business and developing his relationship with the ML. It is a low-conflict story, the romance isn't grand or noteworthy. The antagonists are resolved quickly, and the MC has a relatively smooth time.
Areas of Concern
The ending felt rushed and abrupt. Some plot threads were left dangling, and I was left wanting more closure. For example, the MC's family issues were touched upon but never fully resolved, and the ML's return to the capital felt anticlimactic. The translation quality was also inconsistent, with some sentences feeling awkward or confusing.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be put off by the portrayal of the MC's aunt's family, particularly her treatment of her son. The spoiled son is annoying, and the mother abandoning her child, is off putting. Also, the ML's true identity as a general is quite predictable.
Final Verdict
"Butcher Fulang’s Noodle Shop" is a decent choice if you're looking for a short, sweet, and uncomplicated story. It's not groundbreaking, but it's enjoyable enough for a quick read. If you can overlook the somewhat rushed ending and occasional translation issues, you might find this a satisfying way to spend a few hours. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
