My Thoughts on Broken-Winged Angel
"Broken-Winged Angel" is definitely a novel that leaves an impression, though whether that impression is positive seems to depend heavily on your tolerance for dark themes and morally ambiguous characters. This one is a wild ride, and not always a pleasant one.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this was going to be a dark story. The tags make it abundantly clear: abuse, blackmail, confinement, and a whole host of other trigger warnings are front and center. I braced myself for a twisted narrative, and that's precisely what I got. Initial reactions seem to range from utter disgust to morbid fascination, and I found myself somewhere in the middle.
What Works Well
Several readers praised the novel for its raw portrayal of a toxic relationship. The story doesn't shy away from the problematic nature of the twins' obsession with the female lead, and some find that honesty refreshing. There's a certain guilty pleasure aspect to reading a story that embraces its darkness without trying to sugarcoat it. The writing is such that it makes for a guilty pleasure read.
Areas of Concern
However, the very elements that some find appealing are deal-breakers for others. A common criticism is the lack of character development. The twins are often described as simply "twisted" from the start, with little exploration of the root causes of their behavior. Some felt the female lead lacked agency, and that her actions didn't always make sense. The ending, in particular, seems to be a point of contention, with many finding it rushed and unsatisfying.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, heads up! This section contains potential spoilers, so proceed with caution if you haven't read the book.
Some readers felt that the female lead's attempts to escape were poorly executed, and that she didn't use the twins' obsession to her advantage. The fact that the twins lock her in the basement for months is very disturbing. There's also mention of the son having twisted feelings for his mother which is also a big red flag.
Final Verdict
"Broken-Winged Angel" is a difficult novel to recommend. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, steer clear. However, if you're intrigued by dark themes, possessive love, and don't mind morally questionable characters, it might be worth a read. Just be sure to heed the trigger warnings and go in with realistic expectations. For me, it lands somewhere in the middle: a flawed but fascinating exploration of obsession and trauma.
