My Thoughts on Broken Bonds

Alright, let's dive into "Broken Bonds." This one's a bit of a rollercoaster, and I can see why it's garnered such a mixed bag of reactions. It's definitely a story that isn't afraid to push boundaries, and whether that works or not seems to depend heavily on individual taste.

First Impressions

Going in, I knew this was going to be angsty. The tags alone – adultery, betrayal, childcare – scream "drama bomb." And it delivers on that front. The initial setup is pretty intense, throwing you right into the thick of things with the MC giving birth alone while the ML is off getting engaged. Talk about a hook!

What Works Well

Despite the morally grey areas, I can see the appeal. The author clearly isn't afraid to explore complex relationships and character development. I think that's where the story shines, when it delves into the emotional turmoil and the growth (or lack thereof) of its characters. Some readers mentioned appreciating the exploration of the power dynamics between the MC and ML, and how the ML grapples with his feelings. I can also see how the overarching story is part of a bigger universe.

Areas of Concern

Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: the "scum gong" ML. A lot of readers, myself included, found his actions incredibly frustrating and, at times, downright repulsive. The way he treats his wife, Lin Yanyan, is a major sticking point for many. It's hard to root for a couple when their relationship is built on such a foundation of betrayal and disregard for others.

The MC's character also seems to be a point of contention. Some feel he lacks agency and falls into the "doormat" trope, which can be frustrating to read. I can understand that. It's hard to invest in a character who doesn't seem to value themselves.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Okay, here's where we get into spoiler territory!

Several reviewers mentioned the plot points involving Lin Yanyan and the swapped child. It's a particularly dark and controversial plot point that really highlights the ML's selfishness and the devastating consequences of his actions. Also, MC getting pregnant multiple times, with one ending in a miscarriage, is something that some readers might want to be aware of before diving in.

Final Verdict

"Broken Bonds" is a messy, complicated, and often infuriating read. It's definitely not for the faint of heart, and it requires a certain tolerance for morally ambiguous characters and questionable plot choices. However, if you're looking for a story that will evoke strong emotions and aren't afraid of diving into the deep end of angst, this might be worth a try. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride. Personally, I'm landing on a 3/5. It's not a masterpiece, but it's certainly memorable.

Synopsis

Beitang Ao, Master of the Four Heavenly Sect’s Northern Sect, Ming Dynasty nobleman and inheritor of the title “King of Beitang” (Ruler of Beitang). He was elegant and cool as snow; but within his body, a peerless martial skill was contained. Yan Feili, General of the Northern Sect, in his need to seek vengeance on behalf of a benefactor, met Beitang Ao and after being subdued, pledged his allegiance to the Northern Sect. For eight years, Yan Feili held feelings for Beitang Ao. In the beginning, it was no more than a God-like reverence but gradually, it became a greed fueled admiration. Following the incident in the Demon Forest, Yan Feili soon discovered he was pregnant. It turned out that Yan Feili was, to his surprise, a descendant of the “Moye” tribe. He kept his pregnancy hidden until the child could be born, but soon afterwards, was sent off by Beitang Ao, beginning the dispute between the two. When all is said and done, how will these “entangled emotions” be “resolved”? Entangled emotion: or deep seated emotions (literal translation: Complex), is a call back to the “情结” in novel’s name. resolved: another call back to the title as the word “了断” can also mean to break/end.
