My Thoughts on Beloved Enemy
"Beloved Enemy" is a novel I went into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given its rather… intense reputation. With tags like "abusive characters" and "smut" alongside "business management" and "bickering couple," I knew I was in for a wild ride. And, well, it certainly delivered on that promise.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely throw you into the deep end. The dynamic between the MC, Gu Qingpei, and the ML, Yuan Yang, is volatile from the start. It's a story that doesn't shy away from morally grey areas, and that's either going to be a huge draw or a major turn-off. I found myself intrigued, if a bit uneasy, wanting to see how their relationship would evolve (or implode).
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the character development, particularly with Yuan Yang. Yes, he starts off as immature and possessive, but the story charts his growth as he confronts his flaws. I also found Gu Qingpei to be a compelling character. He's mature, intelligent, and ambitious, but also carries his own baggage. Their interactions, while often fraught with conflict, were undeniably captivating. The author excels at writing complex characters, and I found myself invested in their journeys. The plot, while sometimes relying on common tropes, kept me engaged with its blend of business intrigue, emotional drama, and, of course, steamy romance.
Areas of Concern
It's impossible to ignore the problematic elements of this novel. The power imbalance in the relationship is a recurring theme, and the non-consensual aspects are definitely not for the faint of heart. I can see why some readers found the ML's behavior to be too overbearing and even abusive. While I appreciated his character growth, I also felt that some of his initial actions were never fully addressed or resolved.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the plot point where the ML blackmails the MC as too difficult to overcome. It is a core conflict in the novel.
Final Verdict
"Beloved Enemy" is a complex and controversial novel that's not for everyone. It has moments of brilliance, with well-developed characters and an engaging plot, but it also delves into dark themes that may be triggering for some. If you're willing to navigate the morally grey areas and appreciate character growth amidst intense drama, then you might find this to be a worthwhile read. However, if you're looking for a fluffy, feel-good romance, you'll definitely want to steer clear. For me, it was a flawed but ultimately captivating story that left me with a lot to think about.
