My Thoughts on Avoid the Protagonist!
"Avoid the Protagonist!" promised a clever twist on the transmigration trope, and while it had moments that intrigued me, I ultimately found myself wrestling with some significant issues. The premise is simple: Xin Siyue wakes up as a minor character in a novel, determined to avoid the male lead, Chen Sinan, and the tragic fate that awaits her family. But does it deliver? Let's delve into it.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the female lead, Xin Siyue. She’s portrayed as down-to-earth and hardworking, a refreshing change from some of the more cookie-cutter protagonists in this genre. Her determination to forge her own path, independent of the novel's predetermined plot, was compelling. I was eager to see how she would navigate this dangerous new reality.
What Works Well
Xin Siyue's character development is definitely a highlight. I appreciated her common sense and logical approach to the situation. Several readers also praised the translation quality, noting that it was easy to read and understand, which certainly enhanced my reading experience. I also found the initial premise intriguing, as it provided a solid foundation for potential plot twists and character interactions. Some readers also enjoyed the unique twist of the original novel's author transmigrating into the story as an antagonist, and the FL going back to her own world, then returning to the novel.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the male lead, Chen Sinan, became a major sticking point for me. His behavior is often described as overbearing, possessive, and even outright stalker-ish. I struggled to reconcile his actions with the idea of a romantic lead. There were reports of forced kisses and other instances of him disregarding the female lead's wishes, which made it difficult for me to root for their relationship. Many readers expressed similar sentiments, finding his actions unsettling and difficult to overlook. The side characters also started to grate on my nerves after a while, with their constant meddling and insistence on shipping the main characters, even when Xin Siyue made it clear she wasn't interested.

However, the problematic portrayal of the male lead and the questionable handling of certain plot points ultimately detracted from my enjoyment. While some readers may find the "dog food" moments appealing, I struggled to reconcile the romantic aspects with the unsettling behavior exhibited by Chen Sinan. Overall, I'd say proceed with caution if you're sensitive to potentially abusive character dynamics.
