My Thoughts on At The Beginning Of The Novel, The Heroine Begged The Retired Villain
This novel is a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. It's got some elements that kept me reading, but also some pretty significant drawbacks that held it back from being a truly great read. It seems to be riding the wave of the villain-turned-protagonist trend, but doesn't quite reach the heights of some of its contemporaries.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. The idea of a protagonist transmigrating into the body of a "retired" villain with prior knowledge of the story world is interesting. I was hoping for some clever subversion of tropes and maybe a bit of character depth. What I got was a fairly standard power fantasy with harem elements. That's not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're looking for, but it wasn't quite what I expected.
What Works Well
I appreciated that the MC is portrayed as intelligent and uses his family connections to his advantage. This isn't a dense protagonist stumbling through situations; he's actively shaping his destiny. The pacing is also fairly decent, and the story progresses at a reasonable clip, making it easy to stay engaged. The translator also seems to be doing a good job, making the reading experience smooth.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue is the reliance on clichés. The "arrogant young master" trope is in full force, and the system mechanics feel a bit forced. The MC's shift in mindset after obtaining the system, seemingly abandoning his initial goals, felt jarring and inconsistent. I also found the initial interactions with the ex-fiancée a bit awkward. While I understand the circumstances, the execution felt rushed. The title itself is a little misleading, as the MC's body hasn't actually committed any villainous acts before the story begins.
Final Verdict
"At The Beginning Of The Novel, The Heroine Begged The Retired Villain" is a decent time-killer if you're in the mood for a standard Chinese power fantasy with harem elements. However, don't expect anything groundbreaking or particularly original. It's a fun, albeit generic, read that might scratch your itch for wish fulfillment, but it's not going to leave a lasting impression. I'd give it a 3/5.
