My Thoughts on Apocalypse: Farm or Be Devoured!
Okay, let's dive into "Apocalypse: Farm or Be Devoured!" This novel had a lot of potential with its intriguing blend of genres – apocalypse, farming, and a historical Chinese setting. I was drawn in by the promise of a unique survival story with a BL romance on the side. However, my experience ended up being a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were promising. I enjoyed the setup of the MC getting his system and space, and the early focus on building a family dynamic. It felt like we were heading towards a heartwarming-yet-thrilling journey of rebuilding society in a zombie-infested world.
What Works Well
The core concept is definitely interesting. The blend of farming simulation within an apocalyptic backdrop offers a refreshing take on both genres. When the story focuses on world-building and the challenges of survival, it shines. The idea of the MC using his "golden fingers" to cultivate resources and protect his family is appealing.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, several issues kept me from fully enjoying the novel. The pacing felt incredibly slow, with some sections dragging on and on. I found myself losing interest during extended periods of narration and internal monologues. The MC's characterization also felt inconsistent. Sometimes he was clever and resourceful, but at other times, he came across as naive and frustratingly stubborn. The repetitive nature of certain scenes and side-plots made the story feel longer than it needed to be. The family dynamics, which started out strong, seemed to devolve into petty jealousies and favoritism, which was a letdown.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed strong opinions about the portrayal of the second couple, particularly the characters of Fu Zhan and Wang Chen. There are concerns that Fu Zhan is unfairly characterized, and that the narrative doesn't adequately address Wang Chen's actions.
Final Verdict
"Apocalypse: Farm or Be Devoured!" has a solid foundation with its genre-bending premise and the potential for compelling character development. However, issues with pacing, character consistency, and certain relationship dynamics ultimately hinder its execution. While I appreciate the unique concept, I think it needs some revisions to truly reach its full potential.
