My Thoughts on Aggrieved Fish Sprite

"Aggrieved Fish Sprite" promised a unique blend of xuanhuan, romance, and political intrigue, and after diving in, I found myself mostly agreeing with the positive buzz. This isn't your typical straight-to-romance BL novel; instead, it's a slow burn that focuses on world-building and character development, which I personally appreciated.

First Impressions

The initial hook is definitely intriguing. We have Mo Li, a sprite who has taken human form, seemingly more sensible than the humans around him and living a simple life. The arrival of Meng Qi, a man with a mysterious past and bouts of madness, throws everything into disarray, and their journey together begins. The world felt unique, and I was immediately invested in Mo Li's calm demeanor and how it contrasted with the chaotic events unfolding around him.

What Works Well

The world-building is a major strength. It's subtle and unfolds gradually as Mo Li and Meng Qi travel, offering a unique perspective on human superstitions and political machinations from the eyes of spiritual beings. The author's notes, as some readers have mentioned, add another layer of depth, providing insight into the historical and political context that enriches the story. I found myself particularly drawn to the gentle humor woven throughout, and the central relationship between Mo Li and Meng Qi felt mature and refreshing. The author does a good job of balancing the seriousness with lighter, funnier moments.

Areas of Concern

One thing I did notice is that the pacing can be a bit uneven. The story spans a year, and at times, it felt like the narrative meandered slightly. Also, while the focus on the main characters is a strength, it does mean that the wider world and its inhabitants sometimes feel a bit underdeveloped. I would have liked to have seen more interaction with the other entities that exist in this world.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some reviewers have highlighted specific plot points, such as Meng Qi's true identity as a former revolutionary and the humorous running gag involving a certain general. There are also some rather amusing scenes involving Meng Qi transforming into a gerbil.

Final Verdict

Overall, I found "Aggrieved Fish Sprite" to be a captivating and thought-provoking read. It offers a fresh take on the xuanhuan genre with its slow-burn romance, intricate world-building, and mature characters. While the pacing might not be for everyone, the unique perspective and gentle humor make it a worthwhile journey. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a more nuanced and character-driven fantasy story.

Synopsis

The protagonist Mo Li is a legendary doctor with unparalleled skills. He has a secret: in fact, he’s actually a fish sprite that has attained human form. Wishing to find similar companions, he has travelled all over the world in search for them — but, besides him, other fairy folk simply do not exist! Though he did not manage to find any comrades, however he often got unjustly implicated in the troublesome affairs of others. “Such a rare treasure was actually discovered by one of your village’s people. Then, in order to prevent this piece of news from leaking, all of you can die.” Mo Li who was just staying for the night: …… “To achieve great things, one must not confine himself to any trivialities. It’s better to wrongfully kill a thousand than to leave a single person alive. Set it on fire!” Mo Li who was resting in the guesthouse: …… “If my beloved concubine isn’t cured, then all of you will be buried alongside her!” Mo Li who had just arrived at the capital and inexplicably gotten dragged to the palace: …… “Ha ha ha, so all of you are making a joke out of me. Spit it out! Are you looking down on me? Who do you think you are? Just given your tiny status, and yet you still dare to show contempt for me?” Mo Li, who was just innocently passing by but ended up with a knife pointed at his nose: …… The protagonist: (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻ Hmph, do all of you need a fish to teach you how to behave like a proper human being?! Author’s note: PS, the dialogue was just written for fun. Please don’t mind if it does not match the actual text.
