My Thoughts on After the Global Evolution, I Stand at the Top of the Food Chain
This novel promised a wild ride through a mutated, apocalyptic world, and while it wasn't exactly what I expected, I definitely found it engaging. "After the Global Evolution, I Stand at the Top of the Food Chain" throws you headfirst into a world ravaged by pollution, where humans either become monsters or gain unique abilities.
First Impressions
Okay, I have to be honest, the summary is a bit of a troll. I went in expecting a cutesy, light-hearted shounen-ai story with a doctor patching up mutated patients, but what I got was a much darker, conspiracy-laden apocalyptic tale. Lu Yan, our protagonist, isn't just a surgeon; he's a powerful fighter with a mysterious past and a system-like ability that offers witty commentary. It was a surprise, but a welcome one.
What Works Well
The world-building is definitely a strong point. The author paints a vivid picture of a world twisted by pollution, with bizarre and disturbing transformations. I appreciated how the characters, even the mutated ones, felt real and complex. They weren't just good or bad; their actions were shaped by the circumstances and the influence of pollution. The pacing is also well done, keeping me hooked from beginning to end. I also enjoyed the unique "ability" users and the "eldritch horror" themes. The system is hilarious and the author balances comedy with drama, sweetness with seriousness, and positivity with tragedy.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I can see why some readers felt a bit disappointed. The romance, while present, is definitely a slow burn and takes a backseat to the main plot. Also, the side characters didn't get the attention they needed, and I felt that some of them were underdeveloped.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the ending abrupt with things being cleared up quickly, and some plot points are left unexplained, like the God's reason for being there. Also, the character Shen Qingyang has a tragic ending which may upset some readers.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor flaws and a misleading summary, "After the Global Evolution, I Stand at the Top of the Food Chain" is a worthwhile read. If you enjoy apocalyptic stories with unique world-building, a strong protagonist, and a touch of humor, I'd recommend giving this one a shot. Just be prepared for a darker, more complex story than the summary might suggest.
