My Thoughts on After Becoming the Stand-in for the White Moonlight
First Impressions
After Becoming the Stand-in for the White Moonlight immediately grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise. A modern soul transmigrating into a xianxia novel as the white moonlight's substitute? Sign me up! I was definitely curious to see how Qiao Wan, our MC, would navigate this precarious situation and forge her own path. The initial world-building and the setup of her role within the sect were enough to keep me hooked, eager to see her rise above her assigned role.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of this novel, in my opinion, lies in its female lead. Qiao Wan is a force to be reckoned with. She's not handed power on a silver platter; instead, she claws her way up through sheer hard work and determination. I loved that she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and wasn't portrayed as unrealistically perfect. Her flaws made her relatable, and her strength inspiring. Many readers praised her character growth, and I definitely agree. Watching her evolve from a somewhat naive stand-in to a self-reliant cultivator was incredibly satisfying. I also appreciated the unexpected comedic elements, especially the cross-dressing arc, which added a delightful lightness to the often serious xianxia world. The author did a great job of making the side characters memorable, and I found myself invested in their relationships with Qiao Wan.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find myself occasionally tripping over the pacing. At times, events seemed to unfold at breakneck speed, leaving me struggling to keep up. Some plot developments felt abrupt, and the large cast of characters could be overwhelming. Also, the translation could be a bit confusing at times, and I can understand why some readers may have become lost.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers pointed out issues with the ending, particularly the abruptness of the romance. Some found the ending rushed, while others felt the MC's constant abuse was never properly addressed. I also saw some mentioning that the romance between the MC and the ML felt forced.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, After Becoming the Stand-in for the White Moonlight is a worthwhile read, particularly if you're a fan of strong female leads and xianxia settings. While the pacing and translation could be improved, the engaging story, memorable characters, and comedic moments make it an enjoyable experience. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and a willingness to overlook some of the rougher edges. Overall, I'd give it a solid 3.75 out of 5 stars.
