My Thoughts on A Valiant Life
"A Valiant Life" is a web novel I approached with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the rather varied opinions surrounding it. It's a wild ride through a modern world with a protagonist wielding an encyclopedic system, and while it has its charms, it's also got some quirks that might not appeal to everyone.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely hooked me with their comedic flair. The MC, Lin Fan, is thrust into a world of instant skill mastery, leading to some genuinely funny situations. The early arcs, particularly his time selling pancakes, were lighthearted and enjoyable. It felt like a fun, relaxing read, perfect for unwinding after a long day. However, I quickly realized that the story's trajectory wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped.
What Works Well
The core concept of the encyclopedic system is undeniably engaging. Watching Lin Fan acquire and utilize a diverse range of skills, from medicine to martial arts, is entertaining. The novel shines when it focuses on these skill-based scenarios, delivering satisfying moments of triumph and face-slapping, albeit in a somewhat predictable manner. Also, the author touches on social issues in China like child trafficking and corruption which is a nice touch.
Areas of Concern
As the story progressed, I found myself increasingly frustrated by the repetitive nature of the arcs. The formula of "problem arises, MC solves it, MC gets praised" became tiresome. I also noticed a significant lack of romantic development, despite the presence of potential love interests. The side characters seemed to fade into the background, and the initial charm of the early chapters began to wane. Furthermore, some readers may find the occasional instances of nationalism or prejudice off-putting. The ending felt rushed and unsatisfying, leaving me with a sense of unfulfilled potential.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers mentioned the harem ending, which, while providing closure, felt forced and abrupt. The lack of prior romantic development made the sudden culmination of relationships feel unearned. Also, the author apparently ends the story abruptly because he got bored and his wife was about to give birth.
Final Verdict
"A Valiant Life" is a flawed but entertaining novel. If you're looking for a lighthearted, wish-fulfillment story with a unique system and don't mind repetitive arcs and a lack of romantic depth, you might find it enjoyable. However, if you value complex plots, well-developed characters, and consistent world-building, you might want to approach this one with caution. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars – a fun but ultimately forgettable read.
