My Thoughts on A Dream Like the Beginning

"A Dream Like the Beginning" is a short and sweet historical romance that I recently devoured, and I'm eager to share my thoughts. With only a handful of chapters, I was initially hesitant, but I was quickly drawn into the story.

First Impressions

From the start, I was captivated by the main character's strength and resilience. The premise itself is intriguing: a young woman sells herself into servitude and encounters a kind family. This immediately sets the stage for a story of perseverance and found family, which are themes I always appreciate.

What Works Well

What truly shines is the protagonist, Wen Su. She's a hardworking, intelligent, and selfless character who is dedicated to those she cares about. Her journey from servitude to independence is inspiring, and it's easy to root for her success. The author does a fantastic job of developing her character in such a short space, making her feel like a fully realized person.

The found family aspect is another highlight. The relationship between Wen Su and the Wen family, particularly the young Baoyin, is heartwarming and adds depth to the story. The romance, while present, takes a backseat to the familial bonds and Wen Su's personal growth, which I found refreshing. I also appreciated the historical setting and the glimpse into ancient Chinese society.

Areas of Concern

While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, there were a couple of minor points that gave me pause. I can see how the female lead's decision to leave for two years near the end of the story could be seen as frustrating or unnecessary, as it does prolong the romantic resolution. However, this didn't detract too much from my overall enjoyment, but I can understand why some might find it a bit contrived.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some users have mentioned that Wen Su experiences a traumatic event involving the eldest princess. This is a significant plot point that might be upsetting to some readers, so I wanted to provide a warning.

Final Verdict

Despite a few minor flaws, "A Dream Like the Beginning" is a delightful and heartwarming read. It's a perfect choice if you're looking for a quick, satisfying story with a strong female lead, a focus on found family, and a happy ending. I highly recommend giving it a try – you might just find yourself as charmed by it as I was.

Synopsis

My family is very poor, at home there are only three acres of dry fields. My father tends those three fields as if he was serving our ancestors. Yet, no matter how well he tends, the food produced every year is not enough to fill the stomachs of more than ten people in our household. My grandparents are old, my three uncles are still single, who likes to hang around the village from east to west every day, and only know how to gossip. They are true lazy people. My youngest aunt and I are the same age. She is the treasure of my grandparents. That year, it snowed heavily, there was nothing to eat in the house for a few days. Seeing that the whole family was about to starve to death, my father went to the county to work. Then a broker came to the village and gave me four taels of silver… I sold myself.
