My Thoughts on Zhan Long
Zhan Long. Where do I even begin? This novel is quite the rollercoaster, and after diving deep, I have a lot to unpack. It's a VRMMORPG with a mix of action, adventure, and a healthy dose of… well, let's just say "mature" themes. The overall reader rating is middling, and honestly, I can see why.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The premise of an ex-special forces operative becoming a bodyguard and then diving into a VR game sounded like a recipe for awesome action. The main character, with his supposed real-world skills translating into the game, seemed promising. But that initial spark dimmed as I progressed.
What Works Well
The early character interactions, especially between the male and female leads, were genuinely enjoyable. There's a certain charm to the lighthearted moments and the initial power progression. Some readers appreciated the grand scale of the fights, particularly the large-scale battles where the MC gets to show off his power. The author's writing style is easy to get into, making it a breezy read for those looking for pure escapism.
Areas of Concern
Repetitiveness is a major issue. The same jokes, the same reactions to the MC's overpowered abilities, and the same descriptions of the female leads'… assets… get old fast. The plot often feels nonsensical. The MC's righteousness can be overbearing, especially considering his past. The game mechanics themselves are questionable. Supposedly, this is a VR game with 90%+ reality, but dodging and basic combat tactics seem to be optional extras. It often feels like a stat-based slugfest rather than a skilled battle. I also noticed the real-life segments can feel disconnected and, frankly, absurd. The MC juggles being a bodyguard, running a game studio, and doing police work, all while spending 12+ hours in the game? It strains believability.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I have to address some of the more out there plot points. Several readers were baffled by the "mind r*pe" incident where the female lead's father drugs the MC to ensure his loyalty. The fact that the MC just kind of shrugs it off is… bizarre. Another spoiler is that characters who betray the MC are easily forgiven.
Final Verdict
Zhan Long had potential, but it ultimately falls short. The repetitive nature, plot inconsistencies, and questionable game mechanics make it a frustrating read. If you're looking for a VRMMORPG with depth and realism, this isn't it. However, if you want a lighthearted power fantasy with large-scale battles and don't mind some… questionable… writing choices, Zhan Long might provide some entertainment. I'm giving it a 2.5/5.
