My Thoughts on What Kind of Character Did the Devs Give Me Anyway?
"What Kind of Character Did the Devs Give Me Anyway?" promised a lighthearted dive into a game-like world, and for the most part, it delivered. This story is a quick, enjoyable read that I found myself breezing through. It's definitely a novel to pick up when you need a break and want something fun and engaging.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the synopsis hinting at game elements and a knight protagonist. The premise seemed to set the stage for a classic leveling-up story. However, I quickly realized the story takes a different path. The game elements are there, but they aren't the central focus. Instead, it's more about the MC, a chivalrous knight, navigating a world where he might be more than just a character.
What Works Well
The characters are definitely a highlight. Our MC is naive and chivalrous, and I found myself charmed by his simple, good nature. The side characters are also well-developed and full of life, and their relationships with the MC are a joy to watch unfold. The plot, while not overly complex, is engaging, and the action and drama are balanced with a lighthearted tone. I particularly enjoyed the comedic undertones and the zen-like attitude of many characters, who don't hold grudges for long. Also, the extras are fantastic and add a lot to the overall experience.
Areas of Concern
One of my main issues, is the unanswered questions regarding the game aspect. I wished the author had focused on clarifying some of the confusing bits instead of adding more plot threads. While I appreciated the simplicity of the story, the lack of explanation for certain elements left me wanting more. Additionally, some characters could have used more development.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the protagonist, Luke, is heavily implied to be the God of Light in human form, blurring the lines between player and character. Also, the game aspect seems to fade away around chapter 18.
Final Verdict
Despite some unanswered questions and the fading of the game elements, I found "What Kind of Character Did the Devs Give Me Anyway?" to be a delightful and entertaining read. If you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy adventure with charming characters and a straightforward plot, this novel is definitely worth your time. It's perfect for a quick and enjoyable escape.
