My Thoughts on Mob… Sore mo Waki Mob no Hazu Nan Desu Kedo!?
This web novel definitely has a certain charm, but it's also a story that requires some patience. It's a reincarnation story with a twist – our protagonist isn't aiming to be the hero, just a background character who avoids a predetermined death. The blend of genres, from action and adventure to slice of life and even a touch of yaoi, creates an interesting, if sometimes uneven, experience.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a mob character trying to rewrite his fate. The early chapters had a good pace, introducing the world and the protagonist's unique situation. However, I quickly noticed a trend that many others have pointed out: the story can get bogged down in lengthy explanations and internal monologues.
What Works Well
The protagonist is undeniably likeable. He's often described as adorable, smart, and even a bit goofy. His past life experiences give him a unique perspective, and his genuine desire to avoid his death flag is compelling. I also appreciate the world-building, even if it sometimes comes in the form of info dumps. The author has clearly put thought into crafting this world, which blends medieval and Japanese influences. The translation quality is consistently praised, making the story easy to follow.
Areas of Concern
The pacing is a significant issue. Many readers, myself included, found that conversations and explanations drag on for far too long. What could be conveyed in two chapters stretches to eight or more, leading to a sense of stagnation. The protagonist's denseness, while sometimes amusing, can also be frustrating. Furthermore, the age gaps between the protagonist and some of the male characters are a point of concern for some readers, creating a potentially uncomfortable dynamic. This is further exacerbated by the "reverse harem" aspect of the story, which may not appeal to all readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have highlighted potentially problematic age differences between the protagonist and other characters, including one character who already has a child. Be aware that these elements are present in the story and may affect your enjoyment.
Final Verdict
"Mob… Sore mo Waki Mob no Hazu Nan Desu Kedo!?" has potential, but it's not without its flaws. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed isekai, this might not be for you. However, if you enjoy slice-of-life stories with a focus on character interactions and don't mind a slower pace and some potentially problematic elements, it could be worth a try. Just be prepared for a lot of dialogue and internal monologues along the way. I'm giving it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars – it's enjoyable in parts, but the pacing issues and some questionable character dynamics prevent it from being a truly great read.
