My Thoughts on Undying Patient
"Undying Patient" is a web novel that took me on an emotional rollercoaster. It's a blend of comedy, drama, shounen ai, and tragedy, a combination that intrigued me from the start. The premise is unique: Su Jinzhi, a pure-blood human with a terminal illness, is bound to a dual-system and tasked with helping others find love and appreciate life across different worlds. Each world presents a new illness or disability for Su Jinzhi, adding another layer of complexity to the narrative.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the poetic writing style and the tragic beauty of the story. The initial arcs set a high bar, with intriguing scenarios and a clear sense of emotional depth. The relationship between the MC and ML felt genuine, built on respect and affection rather than forced circumstances. I found myself quickly invested in their journey, eager to see how their bond would evolve across different lifetimes.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its creative arc construction. Each world feels distinct, with well-developed plots and unexpected twists. I appreciated the author's willingness to subvert expectations and explore different facets of love and loss. The characters, especially the MC and ML, are well-developed, and their interactions are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I particularly enjoyed the arcs that delved into complex themes, such as the mental hospital arc, which added a layer of suspense and intrigue to the overall narrative. The systems, No. 0 and No. 1, add a unique dynamic to the story, with their contrasting personalities creating both humor and tension. The author uses language beautifully throughout the story.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the majority of the novel, I did find some inconsistencies in the plot and system mechanics. The punishments meted out by System No. 1 sometimes felt arbitrary, and the overall plot became confusing. I found that the side characters felt underdeveloped, serving primarily as plot devices rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. Also, the endings of some arcs felt abrupt and left me with unanswered questions.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the nature of the ML's actions, particularly in the early arcs, to be problematic. It's important to understand the context behind these actions, which is revealed later in the story. The MC's amnesia and the reasons for his suffering are also key plot points that are best discovered through reading the novel.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Undying Patient" is a compelling and emotionally resonant read. The unique premise, creative arc construction, and well-developed characters make it stand out. While the plot can be confusing at times, the overall emotional impact of the story is undeniable. If you're looking for a novel that will make you laugh, cry, and think, I highly recommend giving "Undying Patient" a try. Just be sure to have some tissues on hand!
