My Thoughts on Uncontrolled Love
"Uncontrolled Love" is definitely a novel that evokes strong reactions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, and while I appreciate the ride, there were definitely some bumps along the way. This is a mature yaoi novel, so going in, you already know it will be heavy, but the extent of the tragedy and psychological elements really took me by surprise.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of childhood friends and the master-servant dynamic. It set the stage for a potentially compelling story of unrequited love and eventual understanding. The relationship between Xie Yan and Shu Nian is complex and messy, and I found myself immediately invested in their journey, even when it was frustrating.
What Works Well
The author excels at creating flawed, realistic characters. Xie Yan, despite his flaws, is a compelling character, and I enjoyed watching him slowly realize the depth of his feelings for Shu Nian. Shu Nian himself is incredibly soft-hearted, and his unwavering devotion, while sometimes frustrating, is ultimately endearing. I found the writing style to be engaging, and the pacing kept me hooked despite the often-heavy subject matter. The exploration of taboo and the characters' struggles to accept their feelings is thought-provoking.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore the problematic elements that several readers have pointed out. The drama sometimes feels excessive and unnecessary, as if conflict is introduced simply for the sake of conflict. And the male lead is, at times, truly difficult to root for. The power imbalance in their relationship is often uncomfortable, and some of his actions are downright reprehensible. I also found the ending, even the alternate happy ending, to be somewhat rushed and unsatisfying. Some plot points could have been explored more thoroughly to give other characters more depth.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers had issues with the ending, particularly with the inclusion of certain characters who had previously caused harm. For example, the woman who falsely accused Xie Yan of taking her virginity being present in the happy ending felt jarring and out of place. Also, the way Ke Luo was handled in the end felt unsatisfying.
Final Verdict
"Uncontrolled Love" is a complex and emotionally charged novel that isn't for everyone. While it has moments of genuine sweetness and explores interesting themes, it's also marred by problematic elements and unnecessary drama. If you're a fan of angst, melodrama, and flawed characters, you might find something to enjoy here. However, be prepared for a potentially triggering and emotionally draining read. Ultimately, I'd give it a cautious recommendation.
