My Thoughts on Top Horror Novelist
"Top Horror Novelist" definitely had me hooked with its intriguing premise: a novelist plunged into deadly horror instances. The blend of horror, mystery, and the supernatural, with a dash of yaoi, is a cocktail I'm always willing to try. While it wasn't a perfect read, it certainly offered a unique experience within the unlimited flow genre.
First Impressions
The initial chapters threw me right into the thick of things. The instances are well-crafted, with layers of mystery that slowly unravel, which I appreciated. The author does a solid job of building suspense and making each arc feel distinct. However, I did find myself occasionally struggling with the sheer density of information. Each chapter is packed, and the arcs themselves are quite lengthy, sometimes feeling like a mountain climb of details.
What Works Well
I was particularly drawn to the focus on murders and human crimes within the supernatural setting. It's a refreshing change from relying solely on jump scares and monstrous encounters. The author's thoroughness in plotting and clue placement is commendable, even if it sometimes borders on being too detailed. The unique nature of each arc also prevents the story from falling into repetitive tropes that plague many unlimited flow novels.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the protagonist. While I can appreciate a morally grey character, I found it difficult to consistently empathize with his actions. There were moments of genuine empathy, especially towards the ghosts he encounters, but then he would switch to treating others dismissively. It created a disconnect that hindered my overall enjoyment. The pacing, while detailed, also felt slow at times, despite the constant action. I also felt like the philosophical undertones could be a bit heavy-handed, particularly if you don't align with the viewpoints presented.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
One thing that stood out to me was the protagonist's power progression. It felt a bit inconsistent. In one instance, he's struggling to survive, and then suddenly, he's on par with much stronger characters after capturing a couple of ghosts. It felt like a bit of a jump.
Final Verdict
Despite my reservations, "Top Horror Novelist" is an enjoyable read for fans of the unlimited flow and horror genres. If you're willing to invest the time and effort to navigate the dense plot and can accept a flawed protagonist, you'll find a rewarding and unique story. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
