My Thoughts on The Villainous Lady Aims to Overthrow the Heroine ~Fight!~
This sequel to "The Villainous Lady Aims to Overthrow the Heroine" is a fun, quick read that definitely scratched my otome game reincarnation itch. I went in expecting the typical villainess story, but I was pleasantly surprised by the unique dynamic between the main character and the heroine.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was drawn in by the protagonist's unusual obsession with rivaling the heroine. It's a refreshing change from the usual "avoid the bad ending" trope. The story dives right into the rivalry, and I found myself immediately invested in seeing how these two would clash. Since the prequel is short, I highly recommend reading it first to get the full context of the story.
What Works Well
The comedic aspect of this novel is definitely a highlight. The over-the-top competitiveness between the villainess and the heroine leads to some truly hilarious situations. I also appreciate that the protagonist isn't portrayed as dense or clueless, a common pitfall in this genre. Instead, she's driven and determined, even if her methods are a bit… eccentric. The romance, while not the main focus, is a sweet and straightforward shoujo-style development that I found quite enjoyable. The prince isn't the typical cardboard cutout either, which is a plus. I found the ending satisfying, wrapping up the rivalry and romance nicely.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the rivalry, I can see how some might find the protagonist's obsession a bit overwhelming. At times, it felt like her entire life revolved around it, overshadowing other aspects of her character and relationships. I also felt that the male lead could have been developed a bit more. While he's not unlikeable, he does feel somewhat passive and could have benefited from more screen time and deeper motivations.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, so some readers pointed out that the heroine's sudden infatuation with the male lead because he's nice to the villainess felt a bit stalker-ish and underdeveloped. I can see where they're coming from. It's a minor point, but it did strike me as a bit odd.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Villainous Lady Aims to Overthrow the Heroine ~Fight!~" is a lighthearted and entertaining read. If you're looking for a unique take on the villainess trope with plenty of humor and a dash of romance, I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a protagonist who's a bit… intense in her pursuit of rivalry! I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
