My Thoughts on The Villain Has a Crush on Me
First Impressions
"The Villain Has a Crush on Me" throws you headfirst into a zombie apocalypse with a twist: our female lead, Mo Chu, gets a second chance. Reborn just days after the outbreak, she's armed with knowledge from her past life and a determination to change things, especially concerning a certain villain, Li Chen. The premise is intriguing, and I was immediately hooked by the idea of a healer MC in a world where they're initially undervalued.
What Works Well
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Mo Chu and Li Chen. The romance isn't the main focus, but it's a sweet side dish to the main course of zombie-slaying and villain-collecting. Mo Chu's level-headedness is a breath of fresh air. She's not overpowered, but her past life experiences give her a crucial edge. I also appreciated that Li Chen isn't just a love interest; he has his own backstory and motivations. The concept of gathering a team of would-be villains is fun, and the story does a good job of giving them backstories and making them feel like more than just cardboard cutouts. The action is also pretty good, the team faces challenges and overcomes them with strategy and teamwork.
Areas of Concern
While the story is entertaining, I did find some areas where it faltered. The world-building, especially regarding the apocalypse itself, feels a bit underdeveloped. The reasons behind the zombie virus and the logic of certain societal aspects, like the initial undervaluation of healers, can be a bit shaky if you think about them too hard. The ending also felt abrupt, with some plot threads left dangling. It would have been nice to see a more fleshed-out conclusion, particularly regarding the zombie virus itself. I feel as though the story focuses more on taking down the main villian, when there are more prevalent threats to humanity at hand.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers have pointed out inconsistencies in the ML's backstory and motivations for liking the MC. There's also a feeling that certain plot points, like the dreams some characters experience, are introduced but then forgotten.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Villain Has a Crush on Me" is a fun and engaging read, especially if you're looking for a lighthearted apocalypse story with a sweet romance and a unique premise. It's not perfect, and it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, but the charming characters and fast-paced plot make it an enjoyable ride. I'd recommend it for a quick and entertaining read, just don't expect a deeply immersive or logically flawless experience. I give it a solid 4/5 stars.
