My Thoughts on The Sick and Gloomy Bamboo Horse Was Stunned by My Kiss
I dove into "The Sick and Gloomy Bamboo Horse Was Stunned by My Kiss" with high hopes, drawn in by the promise of a sweet romance between a sunshine girl and a wheelchair-bound young man. While the novel had its charming moments, it ultimately left me feeling a bit conflicted.
First Impressions
The beginning of the story truly hooked me. The childhood connection between the main characters, Jiang Ning and Yan Xie, was adorable, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship blossom. There was a definite sweetness and innocence to their interactions that I found genuinely heartwarming. I was ready for a heartwarming, if perhaps slightly cliché, romance.
What Works Well
The early chapters, focusing on their teenage years, were a highlight for me. The chemistry between the young leads was palpable, and I felt invested in their growing bond. Many readers praised this part of the story, and I wholeheartedly agree – it's where the novel shines brightest. There are some really good confession and fluff scenes in that part of the book. Also, I appreciated that the side conflicts with relatives were resolved quickly.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse around the halfway point. The introduction of the "butterfly effect" and the subsequent breakup felt forced and unnecessary. It felt like the author was trying to inject drama where it didn't belong, ultimately undermining the beautiful relationship that had been carefully built. The female lead's motivations became confusing, and her actions seemed inconsistent with her character. I also found it difficult to reconcile her supposed maturity with her often-immature decisions. The plot felt rushed towards the end, and some of the antagonistic characters felt underdeveloped.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers pointed out the frustration surrounding Jiang Ning's decision to break up with Yan Xie to prevent him from being disabled in the future. This plot point was widely criticized as being contrived and illogical, especially since the male lead was written to always be insecure in the relationship due to his disability and the separation anxiety.
Final Verdict
"The Sick and Gloomy Bamboo Horse Was Stunned by My Kiss" had the potential to be a truly exceptional romance. The strong start and the undeniable chemistry between the leads initially won me over. However, the later plot developments and the female lead's questionable choices ultimately detracted from my overall enjoyment. While it's still a decent read if you're in the mood for a light and fluffy romance, be prepared for some frustrating plot twists along the way. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, but with the caveat that the second half doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first.
